We have a t.v about 6-7 years old. Its a good one (surround sound system blah blah) Wondering if we should bring it???

We have been told by shipping co. that they can be regulated on arrival in NZ at a price???????

Is it worth it? What is the price of a t.v to buy over there?

Is it worth bringing portables too??? :?

Here are .pdf files of advertising flyers for one of the major electrical goods stores in New Zealand.

Click on each one, then use the .pdf reader magnifying tool to zoom in to read each items details.

Here's (http://www.sony.co.nz/products/product.asp?ssid=1988231680) a page with links to Sony products.

No worries! :nice1

But how do the prices compare?

Is it still worthwhile bringing your own gear over?

Beach Kiwi,
The prices generally seem to be a bit more expensive than in the US. But they are not an order of magnitude more - not even 1.5x. It's hard to be more specific without comparing one product to the same exact brand/model here.

As one example, we just got a great deal on a PC here through BestBuy. It is an e-machine with 512MB RAM and a 160GB hard drive. It did not come with a monitor but did come with a photo-style printer. It cost us about US$450. (Compare this to the PC in your flyer for NZ$699 which has 256MB RAM and 40GB hard drive.)

I'm a bit confused :no

I packed our goodmans tv in england, shipped it here, and when it arrived we put in the aerial, plugged it in, tuned in the stations and that was that. No problems. The dvd's here are region four, so if you can convert your player to multi region :nice1 :nice1 , a very few of the dvd's over here are region two and four, ie we managed to get shrek 2. We bought a dvd player from Dick Smiths Electronic's for $90, and piggy backed it onto our England surround sound dvd player. They told us to log on to their web site, download a code and when programed in will convert the kiwi dvd player to multi-region.

You can watch kiwi videos on an English player, but we are told you cannot record on it. (we haven't tried yet)

Britain uses the PAL transmission format, and the same power supply as we do, which is why it worked ok.

Our TV (Hitachi not well known in these parts) receives the picture but no sound - heres the thing though.

Get Sky, Use it as your decoder, you dont need to convert. Theroetically, we'll let you know!

(how do you get sky - I dont see any advertisements or do I have to ring the Aerial man in the Yellow Pages)?

Does anyone know if the same thing applies in reverse? i.e. We bought a LG flatscreen TV over here in NZ and want to know if it will work if we take it back to UK. I sent an e-mail to LG helpline asking if it would work over there and they replied that I 'would have to change the plug'......not the most helpful answer I was looking for!!

Once you've re-tuned it for the British channels and put a British plug on it, I can't see why it wouldn't work just fine.

Both NZ and UK use PAL, the difference is in the audio signal. UK uses PAL I, NZ PAL B/G. If your telly does not support the local audio format then you will get no sound through the standard aerial connection. As Ali said you can connect the stereo outputs from the Sky box (or through the SCART) to the TV and that will work fine. Your TV manual should tell you which PAL formats are supported.

...Also the TV repair man was talking about sound signal being 5. something, whereas our tv is 3. something and not upgradable.

BUT we were getting SKY anyway and this suited us.

Our fairly new sony tv bought in NZ does not work in the UK.
It doesnt seem to have a menu system to change the PAL settings.
Even connecting it through a dvd or vcr , it still doesnt work :(
picture but no sound.

Maybe you could find the spec for your tv on the net. before shipping it back
