After nearly a yr here I've come to realize that you can buy almost everything if you are willing to spend the time driving around looking for it and willing to pay the price. However there are some things that I still can't track down so I thought I would start a shopping hunt thread where we could post items we are looking for and if anyone sees them they could post where to find them.
So my wish list is this:-
whole nutmegs
marzipan (the proper ground almond stuff not almond flavoured icing)
detox or any tant free smell free disinfectant
I live in hope.

Definately seen whole nutmegs....just can't remember where, most likely a supermarket though.
Can't say I've looked for the other two, but will look out for marzipan as it won't be long before it time to start on the Christmas cakes :)

I get whole nutmegs from New World in Vic Park. They are with the other spices and herbs, but are in a jar with a black label on a low shelf, rather than being with the normal Greggs, Pams etc.
I haven't found marzipan - but I make my own using ground almonds. I can post you a recipe if you'd like. (I found this easier than searching high and low for the stuff - the almond icing is rank and horribly sweet!)
Can't help on the deodorant though sorry.

Yes please to the marzipan recipe. My dad will be here for Xmas and I always make him a huge box of marzipan sweets so the icing stuff will just not do.
I did'nt realise how much I would miss Detox.
Also has anyone seen kirch, I tried to find some for a black forest cake and non of our local shops did it. Failing that I'll get a bottle brought in by dad as duty free.

If any one else has a shopping wish list post it here and I will keep an eye out for you.
Thanks for the help so far, hopefully with Kerry's marzipan that will be one thing achieved.
I've looked in all the N.shore supermarkets I've tried and no nutmeg but it is obviously out there somewhere.
Now to the detox. I think I will have to start writing to the manufactor and tell them of a product opening in NZ.

OK - I can't claim the credit for the marzipan. My Mum sent it to me a couple of years ago, and I believe she stole it from Delia...
350g ground almonds
175g icing sugar
175g caster sugar
1/3 teaspoon of almond extract (you can def get this in New World as I still have the bottle from last year and haven't used it since!)
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon brandy (optional)
2 large eggs plus 1 extra yolk
Sift the sugars into a large bowl then stir in the whole eggs and the egg yolk. Place the bowl over a pan of simmering water and whisk for about 12 minutes until the mixture is thick and fluffy. Remove from the heat and sit the bowl in a couple of cms of cold water. Whisk in the almond extract, lemon juice and brandy and whisk until the mixture is cool. At this point add the ground almonds and knead to form a paste.
I have a recipe using glycerine instead of eggs as well, but it isn't quite as nice - a bit more artificial tasting.
I've checked my nutmegs - they are called Mrs Rogers. There are about 15 in the tub, and I've had it for ages and only used a couple. They have an expiry date of Jan 2008 (but do nutmegs actually expire?), if anyone would like one I'd be happy to post them out.
For AKL people I would only have bought them in either New World in Victoria Park, Woolworths in Richmond Rd or Foodtown in Williamson Ave. These are the only supermarkets I've been to, so it has to be one of them!
I did visit a fab store in Napier which sold spices in bags, and I stocked up on juniper berries, cinnamon sticks and star anise, which are usually quite difficult to get hold of. And they were a bargain price too!

That is probably just almond icing - it's only flavoured and doesn't contain any actual almonds, so quite different to proper marzipan...
It's also very sweet and cloying when coated with another layer of icing.

No Quorn in New Zealand I'm afraid.
I used to use it loads, but I'm so glad that I've been forced to use other things (chick peas, pulses, beans etc). I much prefer using the natural whole foods instead of processed food.
The only thing that I occasionally buy, is vege sausages, and buy occasionally I mean twise in the 8 months we've been here.

Sarah,
Isopropyl is def available - you can get isopropyl wipes from any plumbing store - they are used to clean PVC pipe joints before bonding them together. Not sure if they would be suitable for personal use though? I can ask if you would like?

You can get isopropyl alcohol from pharmacists.
They will only sell it in small bottles e.g. 100ml and the reason it is so difficult to purchase is because it is used in the production of "P" so quantity is limited. Apparently it used to be available in DIY stores etc.
Our local pharmacy said they didn't have any in stock (sold out), but could order it if I wanted some, so you need to ask for it.

Do you mean one like chefs use for transporting or storing their knives? If so, you may need to go to a specialist catering supplies store. I've been to one that allows the public to enter (great saucepans!), but I can't recall the name of it - and it's stored on my laptop at home.
