Hi
Does anyone know much about this area of NZ? how good the transport is (train service busses etc)? the type of town it is (pukekohe) is it (rough, nice etc). Also any towns in the area which are worth looking at to live in?
I have no clue about which areas of south auckland are good or bad I know pukekohe is a bit of way out 51k to be precise but would a comute into Auckland from there be a nightmare or not? The reason for the question is it looks like this is where my partner may get a position so we live there for a year or two, and use as a base to explore the areas we would like to live in.
Thanks for yor time

Pukekohe is actually nice. It's small and has a rural feel. Some of my co-workers live in Pukekohe and commute (by car) to Manukau everyday. It's a manageable commute, but the traffic on the southern motorway will only get worse in the next few years, so it may be more difficult to commute. Some also live in Waiuku which is smaller and on the beach, but further out. The plus is that housing is cheaper.
Don't know about bus/train. I think commuting into Auckland CBD would be a nightmare. Manukau would probably be a good half way point commuting between Pukekohe and CBD. I take my dog to class in Puke (that's Poo-key as they like to call it, not puke) and travel from Howick once a week. It takes me about 45 minutes, but that's just outside the peak.
Hope that helps.

Unsure whether anybody off here lives there, but drop Kiwidollie a PM as she lived there before going back home.
Have been there a few times on deliveries and a visit and in my opinion its not a bad little place to be. Easy commute into Auckland and have that rural feel also.

I have to agree with Susan, Pukekohe was a sweet town when we lived just outside it.
I am still in touch with a few guys from there if you have any local questions:D

Excellent thanks for the offer of asking questions.
Public transport like commuting to auckland seems impossible judging by the time tables. Is it possible to commute on a regular basis to auckland from pukekohe using the train only?
Strange question but what is the music scene like?
I play jazz so it would be good if there was a jazz cafe there, but I am noit holding my breath, I also play in ochestras so any info on ochestras in the area woulsd be good.
Which areas of pukekohe should we avoid living in?
we will be renting for a while so a nice area would be good.
Any nice towns in the area that are near/on the beach we could base ourselves at?
Thanks for your help fella.

Have you tried youtube? Doesn't tell you anything about what the place is like but I find it a fun way to get to see a little of the town before I actually go.
For example a 10 mionute drive through Pukekohe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOQYEdfyFEE
Nice one of downtown whakatane: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbI0brIQufc
Nice one of Tauranga (mount): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nNt7bOzJBo
