Hi, I am hoping for a bit of advice.

My OH has a Btec HND in Electrical Engineering, which he got in the late 80's after finishing school. Since then he has worked for Bt as a telephone eng and is now working for Vodafone as a Network Management Engineer. This job is very technical and envolves ensuring the mobile phone network is working as it should. The job is more about computers, firewalls and network security than telecomms.

My question is: Apart from the HND he does not have any more official qualifications that can be assessed. He does however have a long list of on the job training including courses run by network and equipment providers (ie erricsson). Can this be assesed in any way along with the HND, is that what a full NZQA will do?

Hi there, you might find that your OH will have the required number of points with his HND. My husband has a HNC in Building and we got this assessed (we needed a breakdown of the HNC from the college) and it was assessed at a higher level than expected and got us 50 points.

Might be worthwhile noting that we only used it for the 'basic recognised qualification' as his work experience isn't in the field that he qualification was in.

Toni and Wayne, you will find that the BTEC is covered under diplomas on the points scale, and should be covered even if it is not recognised on the ssl.

You probably don't need to have your qualification assessed by NZQA (I haven't and mine is in telecomms engineering) and save yourself the money.
Make certain that the certificates from the courses are included in your application, it is amazing what a pile of papers can do!!

We have decided to jump into the pool with our 100 points and (hopefully) add a job offer to that in the near future. After all we can't be selected if we don't apply. Fingers crossed.

Hi guys

I also have a Btec National Diploma in Engineering (Telecommunications) I had this qual along with other City & Guilds assesed with NZQA earlier this year. They only came back as a National Certificate in Electronic Engineering level 4.
I have looked at this course on some nz websit'se and it is an apprenticeship/traineeship course. The course i studied was full time for 2 years.
I'm thinking of sending it back for a reveiw.
What have other people had Btec ND come back as??
