Can I please have some suggestions of touristy things we can do in Wellington for one day only, in summer time? We will have 3 small sprogs with us and pushchairs etc, so are kind of limited in terms of nice walks etc...any ideas welcome :)

First suggestion is always Te Papa museum rain or shine. There are many kid friendly activities in there (and you can park there all day).
From there you can also take a stroll around the waterfront and down to Oriental bay.
If you are driving, then going around the bays are great (and a quick visit to the Chocolate Fish Cafe whilst you are there :yes ), also a drive to the top of Mount Victoria is worth a view over Wellington.
If you are in the CBD, then a trip on the Cable Car is great and if not, driving around to the botanic gardens is worth a visit and they have play areas for the kids.

All good ideas from Ian.
If you need a bit of relief time - while you are in Te Papa - there is a cool room called "storyplace" on the second floor for under 5s. You have to book it - I think it is $2 per child - but keeps them entertained and contained for a good hour - and while someone has to stay with them - it gives you a chance to go off on your own for a wee while to have a look around. Then swap over with your partner.

Frank Kitts Park on the waterfront is always great on a sunny day.
Also bus tours around the city good to do.
I think they leave hourly from the train station. And the zoo is small and compact enough (although quite hilly) to do in half a day.
You'd need to get the bus up there though.

Ian and Carol's suggestions are all on the ball in my opinion. Our kids absolutely love Te Papa and nag us to go constantly.

Te Papa - always! The cafe's very child friendly, there seem to be loos on every level. My children (9 and 6) walk around bare-footed in there sometimes (having been out digging in the dinosaur fossil pit) and no-one seems to mind. You can leave coats and buggies at the desk in the foyer and then come and go as you please. Enjoy!
We also love the beach at Oriental Parade - good coffee and lots to look at.
