Our big Brit RHS Gardening books no longer cover the range of odd new plants we now need to care for in the garden and may like to plant.
I think we may need to get an Aus. book that covers kiwi plants too.

Any recommendations?

I'm finding Yates 'Garden Guide' pretty good. It claims to be NZ's bestselling practical garden guide! Also bought a book (a small one) on weeds of NZ, as am unsure about some of the plants growing in my garden.

.......someone once said to me - watch your garden for a full season before ripping out and digging up things - this is true, I found a great Peony growning hidden behind some bushes, I have now got 25 peony plants growing in pots ready to plant out when they are ready!

I'll second the recommendation for the Yates garden guide. When I went to garden centers I took notes on plants that were new to me, then came home and looked them up in the Yates to see if they'd grow in my garden (shade and clay soil, though I'll try to improve on the soil at least). The only other plant book I've picked up is "Nature Guide to the New Zealand Forest" by Dawson/Lucas. I was pretty sure some of the cute little native seedlings coming up all around the garden were going to grow up to be BIG trees so I wanted to try to identify them.

Mmm, I love peonies lucky you. :) It's fun to see what comes up in a new garden. We've got camellias flowering now and I am waiting in suspense for the rhododendrons to bloom to find out what colours they are.

I've gotten the same advice about waiting a year before getting too carried away. I'm planting out some perennials and a few winter veggies but I will have to watch the path of the sun this spring and summer to find out where the best spot for a real veggie patch will be.
