If you're going to rent a car for a while, then you should consider companies that rent late model secondhand vehicles, ones that have been imported from Japan.

The cost of these cars is about half what you pay for brand new cars from companies like Avis and Hertz, but the cars themselves are just about as good.

Here's the biggest nationwide company that rents out these cars:

Beach Kiwi,
Have you used them? Are they reliable (i.e., if we reserve a car, are we guaranteed that a car will be available when we arrive)?

We are just in the process of booking a trip to Wellington in February so all of this info is so very helpful!

Yes, I've used them, and other, smaller companies too. They are pretty much as reliable as the big players like Avis. They have plenty of vehicles, so you shouldn't have any trouble getting something to suit your needs.

Are you familiar with this one? Rates also look reasonable...

No, I'm not familiar with that one, but it should be ok to deal with. I've used 'mom and pop' companies, and they were ok, so a big one like that should be even better.
