Can anyone suggest what is involved in the children's medical? Our son is 7 yrs old, and in good health.
Thanks

Children literally have their sight, hearing, weight, height and reflexes checked and are examined by the doctor for any lumps and bumps but that's about it - no bloods or x-rays at that age. It was fine

They measure weight & height.Ask lots of general health questions.Eye test - reading letters of chart [as in opticians] And quick examination. All very straightforward.
You can print off the form NZIS 1007 - not all of it is relevant to children.

Hi,
My 6 yr old thought it was great fun - one other test they do that hasn't been mentioned is a urine sample - He thought it very funny to wee in a tube!

Is it a problem if your child wears glasses, ie to read the sight chart. Our 12 yr old has pretty bad sight without glasses, in fact last time couldn't read any of the letters without specs on! How much does that count against you ?

Ours was funny as my daughter was just 3 he asked her to read the letters if she could. So we got A for Apple H for house the doctor fell about laughing & said I think she is fine :laugh . No urine sample but things may have changed since we had ours just over a year ago.

Don't think it is a problem if the child wears glasses - I do and they let me do the test with mine - can't see why it would be different for children.
I think the urine test is for 5 years and over btw. ( But might have got that wrong My little one Aged 3 missed that part too although he was very disappointed )

My son aged 6 had blood test also. Must say, the nurse was very good here and he was very brave about it. Also had all the other tests, eyes, weight, height, etc. plus urine sample which took forever to do!!

Official policy is:- "Children under 15 are not usually required to undergo the standard blood tests, unless risk or clinical factors make them necessary."
Was there any reason why your son need to have a blood tests?

Eye test is supposed to be with glasses...they are checking your corrected vision. Only an issue if eyesight not adequately corrected with glasses...OH has poor visual acuity in one eye, and was written on medical form as unusual finding, but didn't cause any issues at all. Does not stop him from doing his job, and can see fine with both eyes, just not well with one covered up.
And urine sample is for 5 and over...Dr almost got that wrong, but there was no way our 3 year old was going to have managed to go in a tube...glad we checked or we'd have been in the loo for hours!!

No, there was no reason for him to have a special blood test, we just done it as part of the procedure - knew he didn't need to have x-ray but thought blood was still needed for him regardless of age - don't tell me we've paid for something that was not needed!!
