Another quick question...

When they are measuring the waistline (in men), do they measure above or below the belly? Or at the widest part?

Hubby's BMI is fine, but it depends where you measure his middle....

Thanks!

Hi Jane,

It is around the belly button :roll That they measure. If it is over a certain measurement ( i think it is 38????? for men not too sure on that one ) they may ask for extra bloods and it might be worth fasting for 12 hours as they can do the test there and then and it can save time as you may not need to go back for more tests.

From the medical form NZIS1007:-

If BMI > 35 in adults or > 97th percentile for applicants aged 15-19 years of age, or waist circumference of females ≥ 88cm, males ≥ 102cm, arrange and attach fasting lipids and fasting glucose tests.
(Refer to the Handbook for Medical Examiners for further information)

I guess I stop tightening it when he turns blue..... :)

Cheers welwynrose!

Having said all this, even if he has to have extra bloods taken, it doesn't mean he automatically fails the medical does it???

Hi Jane,

No it is not a failure by any means just an extra test. I think they test for lippids ( Not sure what they are but I think it is something to do with the liver) and as long as its ok - pass if not you can always re test after a couple of weeks of dieting or something.

lipids are fats. They just want to see how much fat is in your blood. This normally should be low, but when you have a fatty liver (which generally indicates very poor health) the lipid count in your blood will be higher.

At least, that's how I understand it.

If his waist size is close to the limit it may be worth him fasting on the day of the medical in case they need to take the extra blood tests.

I was fairly close but managed to suck it in long enough to pass without the extra tests.

I measured hubby last night, and even pulling it v.tight, and him breathing in, it was still 41 inches. Looks like he needs to start fasting now :-)

2 weeks is plenty of time to shift an inch or so!

Hi Jane,

I have similar concerns, my OH is ok but it is me.

If you don’t mind, would you let me know how you get on?

Our ITA has to be in on the 8th December I have booked meds for beginning of November. Trying to loose as much weight as I Can

Regards
Karen

No problem Karen.

Incidentally, if you are trying to lose weight, have you thought about Slimming World / Weightwatchers?

Hubby and I joined SW in January this year, and both shifted 2 stone within a few months. I reached my target weight, and we both stopped going, but as Hubby still has some weight to lose , we have kept up with the healthy eating plan. 4 months along, and I have not put any back on :-)

Good luck with the diet, I know it is hard work!
