I'm in love with Mackenzie, and was hoping we'd be able to settle somewhere inland of Timaru. However, as luck would have it my OH is in with a good chance of getting work in Mosgiel. We don't want to pass up any opportunity, so I'm wondering (since all we saw of the area was Dunedin, and we're not city types), would I like Mosgiel, do you think? I've been told that Outram is 'rural' - does that mean it's pretty, or just pretty deserted? Any local knowledge would be welcome. Katie x :nice1

Mosgiel is a town of about 9000 people 20 minutes outside Dunedin. It is flat and very much a service town for the surrounding farming area. It's only a relatively short trip from Mosgiel on SH87 out to Central, which if you like the McKenzie, you should also like.

Waihola (lakeside) and Brighton (seaside) are a couple of other smaller villages not far from Mosgiel that would be nice to live in.

:raebanana Sorry - bit late in the day to reply to this one, but have been internet-less since September. During that time we have moved to Mosgiel, and we've been living here for about a month. It's a nice wee town, with a good selection of shops, a great library and a lovely playground for the kids. Dunedin is 15 mins drive down highway 1. I like Dunedin for shopping, but I'm afraid I couldn't live there - way too hilly!! Outram is my idea of a great place to live, and once we're settled in, we hope to find ourselves a nice place to live on the outskirts of either Mosgiel or Outram. I still love Mackenzie, and one day I'll retire there, I think - the 360 degree mountains, with nothing to obstruct the view, the lakes - crystal clear mirrors. Just fine. Otago is beautiful, too. The hills are big and green and gold with gorse just now. Fabulous...
