Anyone any idea why people beep their horns in the Mt. Vic tunnel? I drive through it everyday at random times and there seems to be a 90% chance someone will be beeping out a tune. I don't like to join in without knowing why :-)

Have asked my NZ friends but they didn't know, maybe it is just because it makes a good echo

Because it is fun! My daughter tries to get me to do it whenever we go through. I only listen to her sometimes though...

a lot of people do it to hear the echo..aka doppler effect..you know, when a siren goes past you, it changes frequency so what you hear before it gets to you, as it gets to you and as it moves away or in the case of going through the mt vic tunnel you're moving away from where the sound of the horn started..the wave-length changes in size so the sound is different.

some people just do it to be eejits though :)

I think people honk just to see if they can get somebody to honk back. Usually works too :D

I feel sorry for the pedestrians walking through the tunnel though. It's gotta be a killer of a commute what with breathing the exhaust fumes and being deafened by people playing jingle bells on their car horns.
