For those of you considering and/or aiming for Wellington as a new home, you'll appreciate and get inspired by this well made video about Wellington. It was done by a tourist I believe....

Living here now, I appreciate this video even more than ever!

Hi John
Thanks for the video. Our EOI was selected on Thursday and our first trip to NZ will be in November. OH and I have a dream of living semi-rural as I have spent far too much of my life already in cities but my line of work looks set on taking me to Wellington. The video has certainly given me a better picture of city life in NZ. I know you haven't been there that long but is Wellington a stress-free place for a city and do you know if it is possible to live close enough to commute but still be semi-rural?

Great video, trouble is it makes me feel so sad we're not there :wah
Have you watched the video about 'weather in Wellington airport' listed on same page?
I think we'll stick to driving rather than landing sideways!!!!!:roll

Thanks John.
The video of the airplane landings in Wellington is something else though. I don't remember it all that much, but my wife claims that when we landed in Welly a few years back we must have been on one of those planes that were landing sideways. Maybe I was asleep when we landed. :)
Now in interest of equal time, does anyone have a video of Welly showing the not so great side? I've seen one of Christchurch and it was interesting. I wasn't surprised, as all cities, especially big ones, are going to have those parts that many of us would rather avoid.

Even tho I am settling down here in Auckland, I always think Wellington is better. Again, this statement is personal feelings :D:D

As you will have read elsewhere Wellington is a lovely, compact city - easy to walk around. There are some 'edgy' areas (Newtown, Te Aro, Rongotai) but you don't have to live there. We live in Karori (city end - it's about 3km as the crow flies to the CBD) but we have Johnston Hill Reserve behind us and the Skyline Walkway. We like being close in to the city. House prices in the Upper Hutt seem to be on the rise - and the new Wellington suburbs of Churton Park and Newlands are also popular but not for us. You could of course always live further out like the Kapiti coast or somewhere like Greytown if you don't mind commuting.

To me where I live it's semi-rural as compared to where I am used to living. I live on the ocean in Island Bay. When I get home from work it feels like I am going to a beach get-a-way 2nd home. I personally like the CBD (Courtney Place, etc) because it's a fun vibrant area, but I prefer to have the quiet scenic ocean at my footstep.
As for stress, my commute is a soo easy. I ride a fun scooter to work and it only takes 15 minutes to get to work or home. I am getting a used car in a few week, but that's only for weekend usage. The overall stress I had in Seattle just over 2 months has all but vanished from my life now giving me a sense of purpose and true balance (ying-yang).
I have dreams of working living in a place like Nelson, but time will tell right?
So for stress, do not worry about it. If you create a simple life for yourself down here in Welly then all will good for you too..
Cheers,
John

No one really makes negative videos right? Well I would if my darn DV Camera was not broken. :wah Well sure Welly has some negatives...
- it's windy with rainy crap weather; especially those Southerlies!!! eesh!
- Expensive bus system
- expense cel phones (all of NZ is that way)
- Sense of isolation from the rest of world (both a PRO and a CON?)
Overall - there's no such thing as a perfect place... so I am happy with Welly as my home!
When is your flight to NZ next month? Do you have it booked yet?
Cheers!
Thanks John.

Thanks for the tips on Wellington - the ocean home 15 mins from work sounds like heaven!! When we are out in NZ for the first time in November we have a week in Otaki as my husband has appointments in North Palmerston and I need to look at job prospects in Wellington so hopefully we will have a chance to explore the different options and try the commute from the Kapiti coast. Your tips have given us a good focus. Cheers

Question from a fellow Seattlite: I am considering relocating to either Wellington or Christchurch, but both with the intent to get away from the rainy gloominess that pervades Seattle from October to May. I recognize that you have only been in Wellington since the spring, but do you get a sense of how Wellington may compare to Seattle weather during the winter yet? Thanks!

We have chosen wellington long before our EOI. I love clear water, walking on sand, rain and hills... its all there,
And of course a warm community of great friends and neighbors.

To the person who posted about Island Bay, can I ask, do you get much noise from the airport? I've worked in various locations around Manchester Airport and I wouldn't like to live so close to all the constant air traffic!
Thanks,

I live in Island Bay overlooking the ocean nearly facing due South. I can see planes clearly coming in and I think it's quiet here. They are far away enough where I just don't hear them. :nice1 Lyall Bay is right at the airport and is noticeably noisier. However Wellington is so small that even Oriental Bay can even get some jet sounds now and then!
Welly Airport is not that busy as compared to most major airports. Now living near Auckland International would be a noisy place to be!:exit
