We're looking at schools for our two daughters aged six and eight. Has anyone got any views on NZ schools? I've heard that they're a lot less focused on tests than UK schools - which is a good thing. From reading a bit about the subject, they seem to put more emphasis on core subjects - again a good thing.

Well, you've certainly come to the right place to get a wide range of views on schools!

Can't comment as I'm not there yet, but try browsing through the Forum area called Health, Education & Family. Lots of others have asked the same questions as you and the topic has engendered some passionately-felt responses!

Good luck

Since my kids have been here i am happier from what i have learnt. My 10 yr old goes to the beach everyday for morning exercise which worried me on his schoolwork but when his homework came home there was very little difference between that and his uk homework. It seems core subjects are in the main that is taught and with my 6yr old too they are made to feel very welcome.

I have written about this before if you do a search, but in brief the school that my children go to is FANTASTIC!!!! Try the thred on Myths exposed - education in NZ, I think I put down all my reasons in that thread.

We're very happy with the school our children (9 and 6) go to: great staff, lots of art / craft activities, brilliant play equipment, strong emphasis on reading (great library), writing and maths. Both William and Martha are being stretched nicely... My feeling (after only 8 weeks admittedly) is that they are both going to receive a much more rounded education than they would have done in the UK.

Do you know about decile points? You'll get more info. elsewhere on this forum but I wouldn't necessarily choose a school just because it's a decile 8, 9 or 10.
