don't know the crime rate figures but we live in one of the inner city areas in Chch and we don't have any problems. you are going to get crime whereever you have people and its really a case of picking where you live to a certain extent. I have noticed that an amount of the assault crime here is between certain elements of society. not so much random.
Put it this way, the other morning I came into work on the edge of an industrial area next door to a busy cafe., and got involved in a phone call leaving my car door open. 2 hours later I realised it and went out to shut it and nothing had been touched. Ok I was lucky, but I certainly feel a lot safer here in christchurch than I have in certain areas of the UK.

If it's Crime Statistics you want try here (http://www.stats.govt.nz/people/justice-crime/default.htm).

An earlier thread might be of use:
http://www.emigratenz.org/oldforum/archive/violent-crime-in-new-zealand-176.htm
The key feature of the OP there is that NZ crime statistics count each crime, whereas many others just count the worst crime.
On the other hand, see here:

Where the OP had a bad time (although in most of the responses I looked at the opposite was true).
