Hi,

We hope to arrive in NZ in March of next year.
We may only stay a few years. We want to make sure that we definatly want to make it a permanent thing before we fill out an EOI.
I have a few questions about work visas and entitlements whilst we are there.
Does everyone have to have police checks and medicals done for a work visa? There will be my wife and I travelling with 2 children (2yrs & 3months)
My wife won't be working she will be looking after the children.
If we wanted a work visa for say just 2 years would we need medicals and police checks?
Also what entitlements do you get with regard to use of the doctors etc... We are aware of Plunket is this something my wife could attend with the children or is it for permanent residents only?
Any advice would be really helpful, thanks.

I believe that even for limited visitor stays you need a basic police check and chest X-ray.
For a 2 year work visa you certainly would need medicals and police checks for everyone.
I don't know if work visas allow use of the medical system.
Hope that helped some.

Answers to some of your questions:-

Even if you do go for a PR, it doesn't have to be permanent.

Police checks are for everyone who is 17 years or older.

Medicals are needed if your visa is two years or more.

Free healthcare is available for anyone who has a work visa (or PR) for 2 years or more.

So if you plan on coming to NZ for two years then you and your OH would need police checks and you would all need medicals (much simpler and cheaper for kids).

But, if you are planning on coming out for 2 years or more, then I would seriously check out the PR route before making a final decision. The costs are similar and if you did decide to stay you would not have to go through the whole process again to get the PR. This does of course assume that you are eligible to get a PR?

If you are in planning to be in the country for two years you will need the medical and the police checks, for one year it would be ok and they wouldn't be needed.
