Hello,
We have a rental, and tried to get the phone connected through ihug (vodafone phone and broadband bundle). However they say a credit check has failed, and we need to contact baycorp credit agency to find out why it failed.
As they are closed till monday, has anyone got any advice on credit checks, is there anything we can do to sort this out (will ring them monday)? Will we have this problem with Gas and Electric companies?
We have perfect credit history in the UK before we left.

the problem probably is that you simply dont have a credit history here. The electric shoudl be fine, we were charged a bond to start with as we were new customers and in a rental. Telecom connected us no probs for the phone.

Credit checks don't actually fail, iHug have received information from the credit agency and have decided that from the information provided that you are a bad risk.
You obviously need to ask the credit agency for a copy of you credit file and check that the information held about you is accurate. If you have only just arrived and not yet had any bills to pay then it is likely that it is just a mistake?
Each provider has their own criteria to decide good and bad risk so some may not accept the risk and others may ask for a bond.

When we arrived in NZ we had no credit history here, other than having to pay a $100 bond to the electric company we had no problems, in fact when we moved to a new house 6 months later they just refunded the bond as a credit to our account. Telecom did not ask for a bond, they just asked me to fax a copy of my Passport.
It could be that your credit history has gotten tangled up with someone else who has a similar name. If it turns out that ihug declined you service due to a lack of credit then they don't deserve your business, I'm sure Telecom would be happy to have you as a customer.
