Costs of Emigrating from UK - LIST!
Tia Maria
24th September 2007, 02:18 PM
Thought we could come up with the ultimate costs list!
Try to keep this mainly in list form and cut, paste & edit, to add to the original list, if you think of a cost but don't know how much then put it down and someone else can fill it in later.
Please look to the END of the thread for the latest version(s).
Where costs vary just put a range and state why. Its fine to have a few different costs for the same thing as long as we know why they differ.
From Belmont Babes Thanks! ( www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?p=153923#post153923 ):

EOI is $400 since 30 July this year, so about £155 now (or at least at the beginning of the week when I submitted mine)

For dog charges in Wellington, $85 ($64) for neutered and $120 ($99) for non-neutered dogs (figures in brackets for responsible owners).
For school donations, this depends on decile ratings so might be good to include that figure (would be interesting to see how much each decile costs). I also assume that it depends on primary, secondary so that might be worth including as well.
So for us, decile 2 secondary school donations $75 per child or $120 per family. It should be noted that schools also appear to have other charges e.g. Year book levy, Internet levy etc.

For school donations, this depends on decile ratings so might be good to include that figure (would be interesting to see how much each decile costs).
We are looking at $475 for two children ($300 for one), and I think they are a decile 7. I think they vary quite a lot, and depending on the number of kids, I anticipate the beginning of school year with donations and uniforms and stationary to buy to be quite an expensive time with now two, next year four children in school.
Definitely something I'd include in calculations.

Under the school section you'll need to add school uniform, particularly for intermediate and high school. Obviously depends on location/school etc. but I would estimate about $500-$600. Most primary schools (particularly around Hamilton don't wear uniform).

High School work books $70 - $100 depending on what subjects child takes, $50 per term for school bus pass, plus school camps/trips $100 - $1400 each depending on where they go, this includes intermediate school, our youngest is going away for three days, 40km down the road and the cost is $200 :(

Thanks for this. Really useful - depressing but useful. ITA just arrived and nearly fell of my seat when I saw £685. Then looked at this blog and saw my dog will cost me about £1700!! The equity we were looking to go out with is diminishing by the minute but at least this blog has prevented any nasty surprises further down the line.

Lucky you! All the primary schools around here wear uniform, and cheap it ain't :( Also, it depends how frequently you have to replace lost uniform. Our son has needed new PE kit EVERY TERM so far, that's nearly $200 in total this year just on PE uniform!
Our school contributions are decile 10: $440 for College, $250 for Intermediate and $200 for Primary.

Just to keep it updated, these are a couple of out latest costs from the UK.
ITA is still £685
Migrant levy for SMC is £115 each (max £460 per family)
Child flights seem about 3/4 of the adult fare, but varies a bit.
Our medicals are £700 for family of 5. Adult £200 + £60 xray, kids £60 each.
Moorf Junior
2nd December 2007, 03:26 AM
Storage space for the contents of an average 3 bedroom house - £250 a month with Easistore, Surrey & Sussex.
I agree with rusty, kids flights are about 3/4 that of an adult fare. Also, remember most airlines now charge an adult fare for kids over 12.

perhaps include the contingency costs of returning back to the UK/US/Canada where-ever, should that be decided:
- Another set of cars
- Return removal costs
- Flights/Travel, relocation
- A period of unemployment
- Lease/rental termination costs
- Rennovation of any retained property

Yep, downloaded the form last week. £35 each.
You also need to add the cost of all the photos you need for forms - either from a photo-me booth or the photo paper if printing your own.
I'm also going to have to add to my list the cost of posting (recorded delivery) the photos to my teacher friend to verify them as us and sending them back again. If I had to pay the doctor to do it that would be a higher cost.

Travel:
Auckland bus passes depend on how many zones you require - or you can now buy a multi travel pass for travel on the buses, trains and ferries.
All the info related to this is on the Maxx website.
http://www.maxx.co.nz/home/_pricing_passes.html
Pets:
I've boarded my cat several times - and there are different types of boarding facilities. Those where the cats are in a communal space during the day and then caged individually at night; and those where the cats each have their own separate space and don't interact with the others.
I use a communal cattery based at my vets, mainly as they know his medical history and he always comes back from there pretty chilled out. (He was stressed when he want to a cattery where he was on his own all day.)
It's $14 a day and you get a 10% discount for more than one cat, and for periods of more than 21 days. Extra $2 per day for public holidays - so it can add up over Christmas and New Year. This is also their busiest time, and I booked my cat in several weeks ago to ensure he had a place. I had to pay a non-refundable deposit to secure his spot too - but that could just be because it's such a popular place.
I've used a pet sitter too - they came to the house everyday, so could move curtains and blinds, bring in the mail etc as well as checking on the pet. This wasn't very sucessful for me as my cat hates other people, so finds somewhere to hide from them. As a result I didn't feel very confident about him in their care - and thankfully JoolzR did some check-ups on him too for some peace of mind for me! Petsitter was $18 per day for one visit, and I think $25 for 2 visits. This was for up to 3 cats.
Yearly cat vaccinations are about $70 for the tri vacc, and then another fee if you get the FIV. I can claim this on my insurance though, so not too sure of exact cost.
Cat insurance is $200 annually - covers for $12000 costs in any one year. (And even my accident prove cat hasn't incurred this much yet!)
Visa Issues
UK passport is now $341.80 or $412 for a 48 page. (This includes courier fee.)
NZ passport is $150 but is only valid for 5 years rather than the 10 of a UK one.

Tia,
Thanks for providing this, really helpful. A couple queries...
Could you or someone please explain to me the migrant levy costs? On the immigration website, it quotes the levy to be $300 per person (link below). You quote different amounts for SMC, partner and standard.
How much would the Levy be for myself applying via SMC with my girlfriend on the application as well? Is that $600?
http://glossary.immigration.govt.nz/NR/rdonlyres/00B58004-04AB-46C6-B32B-5CE91FBA979A/0/1028.pdf
The cost of lodging partnership application, would this make the total cost of the ITA to be £685+£420 for me and my girlfriend? Is this payable on application, ie weather it is successful or not?
Cheers,
Dave

When 'partnership' is mentioned, it isn't meaning when a couple intend to emigrate together, one as the main applicant and the other as the partner on the application. Partner sponsorship is when one person is already an NZ citizen or resident, and they sponsor their partner's PR under the family stream.

Dave
the current levy is £120 per adult on the visa, with a maximum of £480 (just having sent it off!) so for two of you £240, but only once you have approval.
The other costs to remember for the SMC visa are the medicals and the Police certs. While the latter are not too expensive the former vary considerably depending upon where they are done.

Thanks guys, thats really helped. So looks like it'll be around the £1700 mark for a couple to get PR.
Is there much of a price difference between doing it from the UK, or doing it from NZ (going over there on holiday working visas initially)?
Is a year about normal for EOI to AIP without a job offer?

Is a year about normal for EOI to AIP without a job offer? You're asking the 'how long is a piece of string?' question. You can look at NZIS London and Auckland websites for their statements of average processing times, but who knows who will be average? You can look at the timelines of forum members on here, to see what's been happening to them. Holdups can happen because NZIS want more evidence of something or other from you, or your medical could show up something that gets it referred to the MA who asks for more tests.

Has anybody got up to date prices for airfares?
In particular 'One way adult fares' - just wondering how far off the current figures in the list are?

I've just been looking up flight prices in case we're ready to move next month (all prices include taxes).
Economy = GBP 993
Premium economy = GBP 1,500
Business = GBP 2,300
This is compared to one-way fares from LAX, where Business class is over US$6,000!! It is crazy when you think about it. The Business fare from the UK goes via LAX and yet is about 1/3 cheaper!

I have just flown one way from UK to NZ. £720 cattle class. Singapore airlines LHR to SIN on an A380 was great, the 777 from SIN to AKL wasn't :(
My flight from Auckland to Christchurch was $60, that's less than the taxi from the airport to Auckland CBD!

ITA IS BEING QUOTED AT £685 on this thread, I have just received my paper work to complete and they have quoted £865. Is this due to being a family of 4? or have prices gone up?
Thanks.

Yes, the first post on the thread dates from 2007, and additions are at many times between then and now - check the date above individual postings to be sure when they were up-to-date.

It's a list people were adding to and reposting to try to keep in one place. You've got the price from NZIS which I assume is right. When you're ready perhaps you may want to repost the list with the updated price in it and other costs.

Ultimate List - Last updated Sept 2010 - a rough guideline only....use only as a starting point to establishing true up-to-date costs.
All these prices have been provided by members of the ENZ forum at some point over the last few years - as a result some may be out of date, or may not apply to your particular situation.
Please DO add to the list, (just copy and paste with new details added), and please DO edit it when something is out of date. It is more effective if you change the list rather than add a post as the posts sometimes get missed. Although posts are also useful for more detailed info! :D

Liam101 - I can see how it would be confusing so I've added a bit of extra info for those coming across the thread for the first time. It was originally put together as a starting point for those trying to work out all the costs involved.
The idea was to not only to have the formal costs but also lots of those 'extras' like pet shipping or childcare, which can take sometime to track down, and to have it all in one place.
In the past I have edited it but I don't get on as often these days, so really it's best if everyone just adds to the list when they have some new info or notice that something is out of date.
It's very simple to edit - I just hit reply, copy the last list, paste, put in the new info and add in the bold - although the last bit is just to make it pretty....
I've put in your new ITA cost, which you can confirm later as to whether it is an individual cost or a family one. I'm afraid I've been here nearly 5 years now so ITAs are a dim and distant memory to me. :D

Just some info to add to that list:
Dog registration Wellington: neutered dogs $110 non-neutered dogs $152 ($52.50 for responsible dog owners but you can't have that price until you have been registered for a year and there are specific criteria such as your property has to be completely fenced in)
Dancing classes for children (Wellington) $100 term (1 hour per week)
Decile 10 primary (Wellington) fees $285 ($235 if paid early)

Tia - I can confirm that the SMC ITA now costs £865 to lodge. We paid it in July.
I can also tell you that the Migrant Levy is now £145 each on SMC. We paid that on 31st August.
You might also want to add to the UK police certificate line that £35 is for standard service (10 days) or £70 for expedited (2 days).
