Anyone from these areas? Where did you go for medicals? Nearest I can find is Cambridge? Is there nowhere in Ipswish, Colchester, Chelmsford? Is it best to pick a radiologist or panel doctor?

Hi Carey,
I had a trawl through the list and I was dismayed at the location choices.
However, I spoke to Jenny @ Aviation Medica at Stansted Airport (01279 661580).
She quoted £135 per adult + £60 each for X-rays and £60 per child. I was told they would need 1 week's notice. This seemed reasonable compared to some of the prices I heard discussed at the Expo. If you can't get there at the same time they can do the adult medicals on separate appointments.
There is a downside however: You have to go to Cambridge (Nuffield) for chest X-rays but at least you are adjacent to the M11 and can get it all done in one outing.
Alan.

Hi Carey
I live in Great Leighs near Braintree and had heard lots of stories about needing to get your medical booked up quick as it is hard to get appointments and you wait ages for results and so on. I got the ball rolling as soon as we receuved our ITA and rang Aviation Medica at Stansted at the start of this month and was offered appointments for me and my husband the following day or a variety of other appointments. We went last Monday at 9.30am and Dr Orton was really nice. After seeing him we nipped up the M11 to Cambridge for the x-rays and got seen straight away despite being half an hour early and back home for lunch. Blood tests results were due back the following day and x-rays a few days later.
He also identifies anything in your medical history that Immigration might pick up on later down the line. He has done this with me as I had shoulder surgery a few years ago and NZ Immigration may query whether it is something that may be an issue in the future, which it won't. Before I left Dr Orton gave me a letter for my doctor and a consent form to release my surgical notes to him to avoid delays further down the line. I took this straight to my GP who has told me the report should be with Dr Orton in about a week.
I'm not sure about the costs that Alan has quoted. Our medicals were £200 each and x-rays £60 each but that is still reasonable compared to a lot I have read about on this site. I have to pay the GP direct for their report and that will be either £29 of £50 depending on the detail required by Aviation Medica.
Friends of our who now live in NZ also used Dr Orton and thought he was very good so it may be worth the trip.

Just had medicals with Aviation Medica.
Cost £200 adult + £60 xrays
child £60.
Jenny and Dr Orton are very helpful and good with kids, who were getting bored after 2 hours (2 adults and 3 kids to do). The waiting room has a lot of comfy chairs and games/colouring for kids as well.
If there is such a thing for an expensive medical, I would have no problem in recommending them. - Look out for the remote control helicopters in his office though!
