So, over xmas, my mum is saying "oh, so and so's daughter is in New Zealand, I'll give you her address, in case"

Like a good son, I humoured her thinking, yeah, Im really going to phone a complete stranger on arrival in Auckland and say "hi, my mum's friend's daughter etc"

She hands me the piece of paper, and its a name I recognise - a girl I went to college with, but it cant be her. Really, that would be too spooky.

Turns out, it is her. Her mum worked with my mum. And, not only did we chat (cos she was in the Uk for xmas) but she lives 5 mins from where we'll be staying!!!

Can someone work out the odds of this happening?

Ask around in NZ and it seems everyone knows everyone else, either directly or otherwise.
We stayed in a lodge in Whitianga and it turned out to be owned by a couple with the same surname as us (no, not smith or jones).
On doing some research in the local area, I paid a visit to a local builder and had a chat.
On return to the uk, I get an e-mail from our hosts in NZ to say that a builder who they havent seen for 30 years has just moved to the town, they will put a word in with him for me if I want them to. Well, yes you guessed it........the same guy.

Its not just NZ we had 3 such experiences in OZ. 1st one was a friend of mums at work who had a sister in NSW and it turned out they were living in the same street as us.
2nd one was that I was walking thru a dept. store in Sydney and heard my name called, was a guy I had worked with in a temp. job in the UK. 3rd one was at Ayres Rock (Uluru) in the off season when it was really quiet and the store keeper called us over to introduce us to another English couple who were working as rangers there, Pete and the guy had gone to college together, even sharing lifts.

Kerry our youngest daughter heard her name called when she was on the goldcoast in Queensland while she was backpacking in Oz. at first she ignored it on the premise that she knew nobody there but when she finally looked over it was a couple of lads who she had known at school.

Theres a thing called 6th remove or somesuch that estimates that most people in the world can be linked together by a chain of 6 people and I think its a very possible scenario.

I was walking down the street in Perth Western Australia when I saw a girl coming towards me. I thought - she looks just like Sue Askew from back home.

She then looked at me, we kind of did a double take ...... yeah - it WAS Sue Askew from back home.

Weird eh.

Oh I've loads of those spooky co-incedences from around the globe but the NZ one was this.

There were two couples who we used to go drinking with lots at the Boat club in St Helens. We used to have such a good time and cry laughing at the antics we got up to. We haven't seen them in 6 years after kids etc we lost touch (also Paul and Julia got banned from boat club but thats for another day).

Xmas 2004 my hubby goes out round town for his annual drinkfest (yes I allow him out once a year no questions asked :laugh ) and he bumps into gareth one of our friends. conversation goes like this.
'Now then Gareth how's it going yadda yadda '
'Awreet lad (wigan slang) ows thee self'
'not bad etc etc planned any hols for next year?'
'Nah we're emigrating, Me Dad's already there me sis goes in Jan, so does Paul and Julia and we are off in April to live. :eek
:eek

Thing is they never knew of our passion for NZ, our first trip was in 1991 and we got engaged there. So we could have been the other side of the world and never knew it but I believe we were fated to have MANY friends in NZ :cheers .

I heard a good one on a radio phone in recently.
The caller, a young lady, was on hols in Mexico. She and her mates are playing beach volleyball on remote beach with very few people around. One of the girls friends calls for the ball, using her name which was quite an unusual one.
With this, a guy sunbathing 50 yards away aproaches the girl and askes politely if her surname happens to be "xxxx"? Yes, she says, it is, so what?
Well, explains the guy, I work for British Telecom, and my last job before coming on holiday was to disconnect your telephone. I have been trying to get in touch with you in Uk for three days. You wont have a phone line when you get home.
