Hi,

I lost my degree certificate somewhere over the past X years - I presume this was because I put it in a "safe" place and have never found it. I have since got a Letter Of Verification from the University confirming my degree and mark obtained. Will the NZQA accept this as proof of my degree (it is on the university headed paper). Or will I have to fork out 50 quid to get the alumni office send me a replacement certificate ?

cheers

I had a trial with this. All my stuff's in storage in the UK, including my degree certificate. I got a certified letter from my university (free), which is as good as a certificate in the real world, but NZIS demanded the certificate anyway so I had to walk somebody through getting it out of storage. I'd pay the 50 quid. Other folk might have had better luck - I can only speak from my experience. To my delight, NZIS then asked for a full transcript of my degree. Free from my uni, but another takes-a-fortnight cycle by email. Your degree is NZIS's absolute "must see" document...

Right - you confirmed my suspicians ! Thanks very much.

I will get onto it now.

I really don't understand why I have to go through this NZQA - they are saying cos I'm claiming points for having a degree in an area of long term skills shortages i ned to do this (I have a Computing degree) - but my Uni is on their list of acceptable establishments. So I have to pay 450 dollars for them to tick a box against the degree ?

Man this is proving expensive !

Wuh? If you've got a computing degree from any of the universities on the approved list, then why do you think you'll have to do the NZQA tomfoolery? Shouldn't be a problem. Again, from my experience only.

because I think since Feb 2007 if you are on the Long Term skills shortage list then you have to do this.

New rules ! :-(

My degree is also on the NZQA approved list but since I am applying for secondary school teacher training, also on the shortage list, all universities require my degree be verified because it will be necessary for teacher registration. At first I was told this was not necessary and so was delayed a month in sending off my application to NZQA! Now I see fedex delivered it three days ago, but no e-mail confirming receipt yet.

Yep, that's the new rule. Seems pointless, I know, but that's the way it is.

I had to pay to get a copy certificate even though I was ony using my certificate to prove basic qalification, as opposed to it relating to my proposed area of work. I work in IT, qual in building.

Daft, yes, avoidable, no.

My 'brick' was FedEx'ed across, and signed for a week ago, but I've still not had a confirmation email..... how long does it take????

I did just that - lost my degree cert over the years and just had a verified letter on Uni note paper. No problem whatsoever with NZQA - I just explained in a covering letter. In any case, my certificate was a great thick embossed scroll that fell apart a little bit more every time you unrolled it - more like blotting paper and clearly no foreword thinking for students who would eventually want to emigrate!

I think you may be showing your age now as when I graduated in 1994 it was a thin certificatge with teh Uni heading on - but looked like it had been made in Word !

I would prefer a nice thick one - especially for 50 quid !

Likewise, mine's a bit of A4. Hey, isn't there a "University Degree for NZIS" template in Word? ;)
