Hello There,
We are a family of three and planning to be in Wellington October mid-end. I will be the only one working, at least to start off with. OH might study at home and take registration exams in the beginning. Work is in Wellington central (walking distance to courteny place). Initially i was planning to get a 2 bed room house/apartment in Wellington central (first pref is to be close to work), but after looking through different web sites, its really expensive. I have seen through Te Aro, Mt Cook etc but the rent is almost the same...:wah

I do not like to travel a lot to get to work and am not planning to buy a car at least in the first 6 months. Can i get some suggestions on where to rent a 2 bedroom house/apartment. I know about lower hutt, upper hutt etc but donot have any idea on how far are they from wellington central and how much time can it take to travel to work especially in busy hours....

From some online survey, i have notices that there is a drastic decrease in average rents as one moves from central to surrounding suburbs (450 to 170 pw in some cases :roll )

I would also appreciate some advise on how to get to work cheaply (public transport) from the suggestion localities in/around city.

I am planning to decide on some place ASAP (after getting to NZ) as temporary accommodation can become really expensive in the start.

Try Petone for value for money its got a great shoping area, beach, and close to public transport and not as far as some of the more cheaper areas.
Found this for you whilst searching::::

New Petone to Wellington ferry

There are now two harbour ferry services operating in Wellington harbour. Joining the established Days Bay service, is a new Petone to Queens Wharf service, introduced last December. The service takes 20 minutes one way and there are six return trips a day during weekdays and three return trips at the weekends. Off-peak trips travel via Matiu/Somes Island.

Both services, operated by East by West Ferries, are part of Metlink – Greater Wellington’s public transport network. The pocket-sized timetable includes sailing times, a map and fare information.

We arrived in Wellington a week ago.
We've found a suitable rental house in that time by using Trademe.co.nz and the newspaper. We didn't start in earnest until Tuesday, so it was less than three days from beginning the search to signing the lease. We take possession tomorrow. We have what we thought would be a difficult situation because we need easy access for a 40' container, have cats and a baby grand. We also wanted 3 bdrm and 2 baths. There are far more ads for 2 bdrm apts than for 3 bdrm houses.
So.... I don't think you'll have much of a problem if you are a little flexible.

Good luck.

For times taken to the outer suburbs of Wellington e.g. Porirua and Lower Hutt the times taken to commute to the CBD is approx 20-30 mins by car or train if no problems. Is slower in rush hour but still nothing like other major cities in Europe.

For finding rentals then trademe as suggested, and also the Dominion Post newspaper are good sources to find cheap rentals. You do have to be quick though as the better rentals get taken very quickly.

is the main site for the public transport in Wellington. It has timetables and maps for trains and buses, and will work out a route for you given start and end points. The routes aren't always the best though - it assumes you can't walk very far.
