Dear All,
I was just wondering if anyone could shed some light on our latest scheme to "get in". We are trying to weigh up our options as to whether to apply for the Skilled Migrant Scheme or the 1 year working visa (to get over there ASAP) and were just wondering can you travel to NZ find work with the 1 year work Visa and then Apply for the Skilled Migrant Scheme (EOI, ITA, etc) when we are there. If this is possible and are there any obvious disadvantages to doing it this way, eg: buying house, etc.
We await your help. :p

Getting an one year WV is generally the quickest way to NZ and yes once you get to NZ and have found a job you can start the PR process (you don't have to wait).
There have been many posts on the various advantages and disadvantages to this approach so would suggest you do a search.
The biggest problems seems to be the lack of medical cover if your visa is less than two years so you would need medical insurance. I also believe that applying for a PR in NZ is cheaper than abroad but can take longer to process.
You can buy a house but if you need a mortgage then you will need at least a 20% deposit.

I got a job offer last month and get my medical this week....I am applying through the WTR 'Talent Visa'. This visa works like this
1. You get a job offer from an accredited company (list on immigration.nz website)
2. Get an xray (£100) and medical + blood tests (£250 say). Get a police report (£10).
3. Get some paperwork from your future employer with job details and salary.
4. Send it all away to London with £95 and an "Application to work in NZ" form (form 1015). If everything is in order they send you back a Temporary Working Visa....not really what I call 'temporary' as it is a 30 month visa......
I'm going to test the water and, if I love it, I shall apply for residence after 2 years.
So I'm very lucky it is so easy and quick. I'm single so it's even easier for me.
Good luck

Well done June - this is the approach that we are trying to take - OH is manager in the NHS and Ministry of Health plus lost of District Health Boards are accredited employers.
If you apply for a talen visa, I am assuming that you don't need to do the whole EOI thing?
Good luck with the move!

We came across on WTR 3 months ago and have never looked back.
We love the country, people, way of life and where we live ( Bucklands Beach) so much so we dont want to wait 2 years to apply for PR, we would like to apply now, does anyone know if we can apply for PR now, maybe on the points system rather than wait for the 2yrs via WTR????

Get a police report (£10).
We're thinking of doing this. You get your police check from NZ? You don't need a UK/Whereever one?

Yes you can, you do not need to wait for 2 years to apply for PR.
You medicals were only valid for 3 months so you will need to have new medicals and your police certificates only last 6 months so if you can't get your application in quickly then you will need new police certificates.
Because you have been in NZ for more than 3 months then you shouldn't be subject to any section 18A conditions either.
From what we can tell they don't rush your application as you are already in the country so it may actually take some time (from ours and friends times would say approx. 6 months).
