This is fast becoming a reality as we have only 3 draws left.
We applied knowing that we had only a small chance of being selected (115pts, but no quals, etc in skill areas), but when the 6 months are up do NZIS just inform you or do they take a look at it?
I'm sure I read that they look at any not selected 'just in case' but can't find where. Maybe it was one of those hopeful dreams?
We will just see what happens and then probably sell and go to try and get a work permit. - I'll might be asking a lot of questions on experience of this in another thread in 6 weeks.
thanks for any help

Unfortunately after 6 mo. if it's not selected it will just be withdrawn from the pool. From the Expression of Interest Guide (http://www.immigration.govt.nz/NR/rdonlyres/E741D6F6-7670-48E1-B824-69B3959461D4/0/1101.pdf):An Expression of Interest is current for a period of six months from the date of submission to the Pool. If selection(s) of Expressions of Interest occur within the six-month period and yours is not selected, we will automatically withdraw your Expression of Interest at the end of the six-month period.
If your Expression of Interest is withdrawn, you can submit another one if you wish.
(I believe if you submit another one, you have to pay the full fee again.)
Fingers crossed for the last 3 draws! :)

Hi Rusty
Sorry to hear about that
I think only luck can help you. However before you apply you should read that New Zealand Immigration has very clear defined policies. they give preference to
1. People with job offer
2. People with 140+ points
3. People with 15 experience ie over 6 year in Absulate skill shortage list
check this report

You will find that there over 500 still in the pool, and more apply each day.
To be more realistic, you should know that NZ select 700-800 people in each draw, and each year they invite 45000 to 50000 immigrants.
I suggest that if you are not selected, you should not try untill you improve you points table. You should also think about Canada or some where else. If you love NZ as we all do, you might have chance to come from Canada ..
Hope this can help

Indeed. The "six months and you're out" rule is harsh. All you can do is rely on luck, or... make your own luck. The obvious choice is to get on a plane and go and get yourself a job. It's a long way, it's time consuming, it's expensive, but if it's the only thing that'll get you pulled and processed then surely it's worth it.
If you want to go then commit yourselves fully - you *will* make it. Really, you will. Just don't give up!

Yup, that's about the size of it I'm afraid.

Thanks for the replies, they confirm what we expected.
The lowest draws in the last 12 months were in October 06 where 115 and 110 points were selected - so here's hoping.
As I said above, we will probably still sell and go and try to get a job. Looking at quals for me and other half that improve employment prospects for that.
Lastly, Canada is not an option - its UK or NZ, no point going somewhere else to try to get to NZ.

We put in our EOI in March this year. We only have 120 points as my husband works in IT but his degree is in Economics so can't claim any bonus points.
Ours expired recently but we just submitted another one so get another 6 months. Historically they do dip to the lower points from time to time and we want to make sur we're still in if they do. This time last year was the lowest all year and the last 3 draws have all included people with no bonus points and the points required has dropped each time. I have my fingers crossed they will drop again on the next one (they were down to 125 this time so only need another 5 point drop).
We are hoping to go next September/October so if we don't get selected by then I will fly out and attempt to get a job and the rest of the family will join me later. In the meantime I think the relatively small cost of keeping a current EOI is well worth it on the chance we will get seleted without a job offer.

Rusty - don't know what trade you are in and am probably asking the obvious but have you thought about lining up some interviews and going over for a week or so to see if you can get job offer (then upping your points and almost certainly guaranteeing chances of beng picked) The costs might be worth it in the end if you are soon going to be consider submitting another EOI and waiting again.
Good luck anyway :nice1

MinnieUK, we will do the same as you and re-apply just in case. Like you say, no harm done except the cost (£100 ish). I would hate it if we didn't and the points dropped to where we would have got in. We have watched the selection point very carefully like you. Good luck next draw.
Vixxann, although I'm an experienced sales manager it does not come under a skill and even if I got the same job I would not get more points for it (also hard to convince an employer to get that role in a new market area). Saying that, we will hopefully sell up and go next summer and hope to get a job and means of staying - a little worrying with 3 kids, but what is life without adventure!
We have other plans as my sister-in-law is in ChCh and MiL will go in Jan/Feb, there is a possibility of sibling sponsorship - just a few complications and a $46k job to get past. Still hope for skilled route though.
The next 6 weeks will certainly bring changes to our lives one way or another.
