I have loads of pairs of shoes and am wondering whether to bring them all or not?

I'm going to bring all my best shoes even though there won't be many (any?) occasions for wearing fancy stilettoes in Whitianga. (Maybe I will ust take them out and stroke them every so often....) But what about everyday shoes like kitten heeled ankle boots - should I bring those? Or will I never wear them?

Oh, it's so hard - I'm naturally a real hoarder, which makes these decisions even harder to make, but maybe I should just bite the bullet and make a trip to the charity shop...

I'm actually thinking of loading up on shoes because I hear they are so much more expensive there. Sorry, no help at all I know. I'd say if you have space, bring them. Could always have a garage sale when you arrive if you find they are really useless.

Well, I'm not a true shoe lover (no kitten heels), but I have found that I mainly wear flip-flops for most of the year here and trainer/walking shoes if out at w/es. There's not much call for nice shoes, and also I keep having to take my shoes off at work on home visits, so I ditched my knee high boots and shoes with difficult fastenings pretty quick too. You could bring them and have them in a sort of shrine for footwear, but you probably won't get much more wear out of them.

Flog them on eBay and put the cash towards your moving fund, or buy some diamond encrusted Jandals when you arrive :D

Shoes sell quite well on eBay (OH used to run ebay shop)

Oh I love shoes and boots and was thinking of stocking up too cos of the expensive thing - now not so sure. Not sure generally about clothing etc to bring as mate of mine who was in NZ for a few years reckons everyone is pretty casual and that most of the stuff I wear to work here would be classed as 'dressed up'!! Dilemma - any advice??

Bring them! I have over 150 pairs of shoes and boots, and they all get worn. Admittedly there is more opportunity for me in Auckland than there is in Whitianga for wearing nice shoes, but I still wore nice boots when I was there Scallop Festival recently, and a different pair out in the evening.
Keep them and have a room for displaying them all. (I have!)

Oh, YOU'RE the girl everyone's talking about!

LOL.

Thanks for all the tips. I think I will bring them all, and maybe buy some more, too. (Ones I'll actually wear.)

I would definitely bring them. Good shoes can be expensive over here. I work in an office and still wear ankle/long boots particularly in winter when it can be both cold and wet!

So bring them, you KNOW you want to.

Bring 'em all and go shopping for new ones - no lovely Italian leather ones here my love.

Well, there may be in the City, but they would cost you an arm and a leg.

If they cost you a leg, then you would only need one shoe. Surely you could get them half price then?

And if you're on their mailing list they do nice things like send you vouchers for 20% off the new season styles, and for the sales... not that I would know anything about this of course!

Thank you so much for this thread, it has helped to take my mind off fretting over house sale/home inspection etc. I've moved a lot over the years and am perfectly happy to adapt to local conditions. By adapt I mean add a category of footwear, living in Connecticut has added the snow range and I've been happily stocking up on the beaded flip-flops from Target for NZ.

This doesn't mean that I'm ignoring the other categories, I have no intention of losing touch with my inner-Imelda.

Absolutely on the categories for clothes. I had great fun stocking up on coats and hats when I moved here and was most put out on our last trip to NZ when OH returned with a haul from the Darfield farm supply store. We had to go straight back there so I could have wellies and overalls too.

Just having returned form the UK I could have bought a 100 pairs.

In Welly I rarely see a pair that takes my eye. BRING them all!!! I am a kitten heal, stilletoe, boot wearing shoe person. I wish I had the money to have bought some more in the UK just one pair of lonely boots for me.

I'm going to have to show hubby this thread - I had to throw around 50 pairs away before we came here and I do wish I'd saved more... I used to spend heaps on shoes but now I can't bring myself to buy anymore Diesel sneakers as they're about $300+ here :wah

I did attempt to buy a cheap pair but they've been tossed in the wardrobe somewhere never to be seen again - sorry, can't do cheap shoes (except flip flops!).

There's a few boutiquey shoe shops in Chch that are great, but I find myself in the sports / tramping shops these days looking at Merrells more than stilletos! I bought one pair of stilleto's with me (my fav Hobbs pair) and I've worn them once (to a firemans bash) in 3 years!!! I nearly fell over.... :laugh My only pair of heeled boots I in a friend's garage after a party a few months back and haven't seen them since - no need for them (unless I wanna sow seeds in veggie garden!)

So glad to have seen this thread - its made my day! (Yes very sad I know). I understand exactly how you feel. I'm only coming for a year and the shoe dilemma is so tough - I say bring them all without a doubt. That's what I would do given the chance. As it is, I'm being very restrained - one pair of high heels, one pair of black boots, one of brown, one daytime flip flops, one dressy flip flops, one running shoes......... oh dear, this doesn't look very restrained at all - need a rethink!! Good luck with your shoe dilemma xx

Unless space is at a premium and you're planning to be living "The Good Life", I don't understand why you wouldn't need or want all your shoes.
Maybe Auckland is different to Welly and Chch, but people here definitely wear gorgeous shoes to work, and even more lovely shoes out in the evening.
I only wear jandals to the beach, or sometimes to the dairy when hungover... Trainers are for running and going to the gym only. I don't have any others. I wear ballet flats when I'm not in heels - which isn't that often. (I'm short - I need all the help I can get!)
I wear heels to the pub to watch rugby - hell, I've even worn heels to the rugby!
I also buy stuff online. I can recommend Faith, Office and Schuh for cheap shoes with good delivery from the UK.

In the end I gave two pairs of kitten-heeled ankle boots to my sister and then bought four pairs of Birkenstocks, a pair of ballet flats and a pair of trainers. So, on balance, I didn't do that well at minimising my collection!

At the moment I have a pair of Adidas trainers(fashion type, don't do running!!) and 2 pairs of Birkinstocks!!
Our stuff is still in boxes in OH's parents spare sitting room. I packed my own boxes which included the ones with the boots, sandals, trainers and more Birkenstocks.
I did clean the bottoms though as MAF doesn't like mud even if it is a micron. The thought of my satin stilleto slingbacks being drenched with cleaner was enough to get me on the back step with a washing up bowl!!!!
I am like the lady from the Clarks ad years ago I wear my bestest one around the house with my pjs on!!!
The shoe issue here (Auckland) fab designer, flip flops, Crocs, bare feet. I went to a job interveiw today with my Birkos on, would never had done that in the UK!!! Anything goes.
Bring them all, wear them everywhere. I just want mine :( NOW!!!

Well I don't know if it's just me, but i am finding this thread very akin to an ancient thread about sausages. (Yes, you read it right, sausages :D)

Before we came over, and bear in mind we had never been to NZ before, there was a MAJOR thread about how you couldn't find a decent sausage here. When we arrived, we were terribly nervous about sausage purchasing...
but, we find NZ saussies absolutely fine. Actually, quite good, and a fair selection, too.

Well...I've lived in Milan and Paris and I DO like my shoes (a girl can never really have enough, in my opinion) and I find the shoes here very, very nice :D so, perhaps it's just me, as I said, but the shoe situation is certainly manageable. BTW, I haven't been shopping in Melbourne yet.... :D

Keep in mine that a decent pair of work shoes here is often $120-200. I'm done to buying one or two pairs a year to last me all year. I'm living in Wellington though, and the shoe culture is big here. I've never seen so many pairs of boots in my life! While I haven' worn my heels yet (too hard on the steep welly hills), I wish I had another couple pair of boots.

I bought all my shoes with me. Only wear 3 pairs and live in flats for work and then flip flops or trainers.

Still managed to buy another 2 pairs since being here much to the horror from my OH.

Ha ha ha.

I am the same with handbags. Bought all those with me. I walk into work every day with a different one. and boots well...Don't care if they sit in thier boxes. I need them !!!

I gave loads of pairs of shoes & boots to my best friend, only to have to suffer twinges of regret all evening as she paraded around in a pair of my old favourites! Still, her enjoyment was worth it and I do have loads more I kept.

As an aside... My friend just bought new trainers here in the UK. We were a teensy bit surprised to see this printed on the box; 'Average Contents 2' :D

Ladies, I discovered Overland in Welly yesterday, and let me say that just being with such lovely shoes brought on a euphoric feeling that I have missed tremendously. I've had a case of immeasurable shoe envy since getting here (there seems to be quite a shoe culture in Welly, and these girls sure know how to wear every color and style of shoe, boot, and sandal imaginable, and well, too!)

So, having packed only a handful of shoes (mostly comfy ones) in my suitcases (and bemoaning the fact that it's weeks yet before my shoe collection arrives by container), I've been experiencing a bit of gorgeous-shoe withdrawal :p

Yesterday, my 19 yr old and I beamed radiantly as we each tried on styles by Isabella Anselmi (never heard of the brand, but I'm now hooked). There were so many amazing styles to choose from, but we kept our heads about us and decided to be very practical and go with a basic for starters: we each got a pair of Isabella pumps in black :laugh

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, we'll plan our next attack on the store and buy something in a bold new color we've never owned before. I can't wait (shhhhhh...don't tell OH. He was out of town and hasn't seen the you-know-what's we bought yesterday ;) )

Cheers,
Christine

About the cleanliness of the shoes that you bring...

What do they expect, exactly - pristine condition? I have loads of old favourites that are a bit bashed up but clean(ish).

Only my friend got fined $1000 for unwittingly bringing muddy boots with him and I did notice that somebody here mentioned 'microns' of dirt...

Just clean them as best you can, particularly the soles. They are really looking for walking boots/shoes with soil, seeds and other harmful to NZ stuff on them.

If they do find anything not clean enough in your shipping container, they usually just take stuff away for cleaning. You don't usually get fined, unless of course you say you have nothing to declare at the airport and they find muddy boot in your suitcase.
