I'm after a hotel not too far from the ferry terminal in Wellington. I would say I'm after cheap rather than posh as this holiday is really starting to get expensive. :uhoh Any ideas anyone??:nice1

Can't really give advice on cheap accommodation around the ferry terminal, but it would be worth trying these two sites:-travelbug (http://www.travelbug.co.nz/) and Wellington Accommodation (http://www.wellingtonnz.com/Accommodation/)

There's a backpackers almost across the street as I recall. It was cheap, and we had a private bathroom which was nice. Location over comfort I'd call it. Sorry I've forgotten it's name!

I've stayed in that backpackers too - right on a main road and I was worried I wouldn't sleep cos of noise - but no problem. Bed comfy, en suite, clean, friendly, cheap food etc etc. We'll probably be staying there again at the end of this month so I guess it's not that bad!!!!

You're probably thinking of the Downtown Backpackers (www.downtownbackpackers.co.nz/) which used to be called the Waterloo when it was a hotel (I think). Apparently Queen Elizabeth stayed there sometime in the 50s so it was probably THE place to be back then.

I stayed there for about 2 months on arrival and its good. A bit shabby but clean, a bit noisy but convenient, staff was good, cafe was yummy (big coffees, small price). Overall a good choice if you're after cheap, safe and not flashy. There is construction on the lot next to it right now so there isn't really a quiet side anymore. Ask for a top floor room with a view of the harbour - couldn't hurt to ask could it? I think it was about $125 a week for a single with shared bath (which I rarely shared).

We stayed at the YMCA, it was a 5 minute drive away (well it would have been if we hadn't missed our turning). It was very cheap, clean. We had a room for 4. The kids spent all night on the massage chairs in one of the lounges.

Almost forgot, there is a free bus from the ferry terminal to the train station and the backpackers is directly across the street from there.
