Hi,

Myrkks hubby here, dozy idiot has forgotten my username & password...ooops...me not Myrkk she has told me to say, under the thumb me, not! Anyway no completely off the topic...

I have just been asked by a Job Agency in Wellie if I would be happy to give them sole rights, is this normal in NZ as it is definately not in the UK and I am concerned about missing opportunities either way....

Can anybody advise, thanks in advance

I've never come across an agency ask that before. I'm in Auckland and have been using various agencies to source contracts for the last few years.
I'm very happy with my current agency and would recommend them to anyone. (Not much help if you're heading to Welly though, sorry.)
I'm not really sure what benefit it would be to you, as potentially you are narrowing your market to only the jobs that they are able to source.

Hi Myrkk...I may be able to help you there as I am a recruitment consultant.

I work in the travel recruitment industry - finding jobs and candidates in the travel sector. There is a massive skills shortage at the moment in the corporate market so when I get a good candidate come in who has the right skills, I ask them if they will leave it with me for around a week so I have the opportunity to talk through all the available jobs with them and get their CV as much exposure with my clients as possible. The reason for asking for exclusivity is some (less ethical) recruitment consultants will get their grubby mitts on your CV and send it out to absolutely every single relevant company within 100miles of your home without so much as talking to you. Then, when I come along, tell you about the job and make sure you are A) interested and B) happy to be put forward, I pass your CV over and find another agency has already sent it over.

I think if somebody has asked you for exclusivity, you should be quite chuffed. It means they think your CV is pretty good for the types of job you are looking for and you should be interviewed / placed quite quickly. I've had the same thing. OH has applied to a rec 2 rec agency (a recruitment agency who look for recruitment jobs for recruitment consultants - bit confusing I know)....anyway, they have asked us for exclusivity which we have been happy to give them. Only problem is, we have already applied to most of the recruitment agencies in and around CHCH so unfortunately, I doubt they will be able to help us much.

All there is to say is...I sit on the recruiter side of the fence and if you can give them exclusivity it usually means they work that little bit harder on your CV knowing that in a week or so you will end up registering with everybody.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks.

that's a good ego boost for my hubbie at the mo. :D

We thought it would narrow our options but it sounds like it may be worthwhile to give them a week or so. We're going to the expo. a week Friday so can give her up until then.

Cheers guys.
