Hi,

My husband and I are at the start of the process. We got married in NZ in 2005 and loved the place. We had interviews while on honeymoon but then decided it would probably be better to have kids then go. Well two years later we now have a 6 month old and I don't want to wait any longer- I want him to grow up in a better place than round here.

I have been reading the forums for a bit and getting some really good advice - thanks. Couple of questions though:

- My husband is a mental health nurse and I'm an accountant. At the moment we both work full time and I bring in the larger junk of our income. Worried if we have another baby in NZ is we could cope financially with me not working for a few months - any thought - anyone been there?

- Christchuch is our first choice as a place to go but I might be able to transfer my job to the company's NZ head office which is in Wellington. Are there affordable suburbs which don't mean a long commute to work - i'm trying to get away from that - plus I want the little one to grow up in a nice area and spned some time with his mummy. The health board has a base in central wellington and another in Kilbirnie and my job would be CBD - where should we be looking?

If we did go to Christchurch would I be able to find work - I work in industry rather than an accountancy firm?

Has everyone made sure their house is sold before they moved - how many months in advance did you put it on the market?

Sorry for the long post - that will do for starters!

Hi and welcome. Can't answer your first two q's, but as for house sale we, and I suspect most here, needed to sell our houses to fund the move, so there wasn't really a choice.

How long before? Depends how quickly you think it will sell I suppose. The whole end-to-end process for gaining PR took us around 9 months without a job offer. Sounds like a oing time, but actually that's reasonable speedy without job offer.

Hope that's some degree of help.

Hello and welcome to the forum...

When to put your house on the market is the million dollar question, I would say if your move is dependant on the funds, sooner rather than later. We put our house up in May, had an offer which we accepted mid August...and still waiting for something to happen ( after countless phonecalls) and we leave for NZ on the 16th November!!! The stress levels are RATHER high...but I think we are lucky to be in the position to have an offer.

There are lots and lots of people trying to desperately get an offer and sell, and it is holding up the whole process, see 'Anyone on the Market' thread!

Good Luck

Hey Baggiesfans
We're going to Christchurch too as OH has job he's supposed to start in November - eek?!? We're another one of that long list of folks who are trying to sell our house. Hindsight's a great thing and I wish we'd taken the plunge earlier on selling the house so my vote would be go for it.
Hope it all goes well

For mental health jobs in Wellington with CCDHB, AFAIK, it is either Ward 27 or Porirua hospital. From what I can gather you have to be "very special" to be able to cope with Ward 27 - please investigate carefully before you consider this option (they have plenty of problems there).

Approx wage for mental health nurse would be around 45K NZD which is enough to live on if you don't have any additional outgoings e.g. rent, mortgage loans. This is very subjective and depends on lifestyle etc, and the amount of capital you will bring over?

If you plan to live in the suburbs then as an example Porirua to CBD takes 20-30 mins on a normal day (but more if you have to travel in rush hour), there are also trains from the main suburbs to make it easier.

Clare's son is joining us in June/July and he's giving up his Baggies season ticket, so is there going to be anybody left to support them ???? :laugh
