hey shagen

well said. i have an 86 yr old grand-aunt who's a better ballroom dancer than i am... dips and turns and all. my grand-uncle just died last year he was 87. his eldest sister died when she was 97. i am the eldest granddaughter of the clan and so they saw me in a crib, then stroller, then walker, then baby trike, then 2-wheel bike, then college then medicine then wedding then babies 1-5. i don't mind getting old as long as i don't get alzheimers or dementia.

so, yes, because my elders are still around, i still feel like the baby whenever we have family reunions. then i see the kids and my cousins' kids and i feel, at the same time, i already belong to the older generation. shheeesh.

i have a lot of cousins as young as ivar and pleccy. they call me "ATE ANNIE" (pronounced ah-teh) which means older sister (a form of endearment or respect). at the same time I have cousins as young as diny's kids, or leslie's or tate's for that matter. (My uncles get married late and they choose wives younger than me! :wah )

so i think i'm in the middle years. anyway, am loving it. we get to do things we couldnt do when we were teenagers.

annie :nice1

here and now i would be grateful to remember my age. if i started getting into permutations of months etc it would soon involve laws of physics, phases of the moon and, being in uk, inland revenue as well. cannot be bothered...

did notice that my grandfather became utterly childlike before dying age 92. there was something strangely beautiful about it.

I think this is an appropriate post here...

Do you realise that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we're kids? If you're less than 10 years old, you're so excited about aging that you think in fractions.

"How old are you?" "I'm four and a half!" You're never thirty-six and a half You're four and a half, going on five!

That's the key.

You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back. You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead.

"How old are you?" "I'm gonna be 16!" You could be 13, but hey, you're gonna be 16! And then the greatest day of your life . . . you become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony . . . YOU BECOME 21. YESSSS!!!

But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk! . He TURNED; we had to throw him out There's no fun now, you're Just a sour-dumpling. What's wrong? What's changed?

You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you're PUSHING 40.

Whoa! Put on the brakes, it's all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone.

But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn't think you would!

So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60.

You've built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it's a day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday!

You get into your 80s and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you REACH bedtime.

And it doesn't end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; "I Was JUST 92."

Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. "I'm 100 and a half!"

May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!! You are only as old as you think you are!

Shagen that was so funny :nice1 . I could see that as a stand up comics piece, Brilliant.

We do !!!!!!!

Andrew is 43 (just) and I'm 42 (still for a little bit)

PS with a 10 year old we just feel ageless anyway.

Diny

I think the 40's are fine. I think it's the age of acceptance. You suddenly realise that you're sort of getting towards middle age and you don't want to waste any more time on worrying about the unimportant things in life. It's certainly an age for putting everything into perspective.

I don't necessarily feel that my life began at 40. I've been having an absolute ball from day one and if I met my Waterloo tomorrow, I'd meet it knowing that I hadn't wasted one single moment. Would I do it all again if I had my life to live over ...... you bet ... only even more so :nice1

Well said Diny, alternatively, my Nan says she is as old as her tounge and a little older than her teeth!

Age is just a number, and it is the vitality of the person which counts.

Next month I will be 45 1/2 and the OH will be 48. I agree with Jam about the 40s being the new 30s. Mine is certainly not my parents' 40s. They seemed to be older even in their 20s, but they did have children!

It's also the home of the meat pie, fish & chips, hokey pokey ice cream and a take away shop on EVERY street corner ............ that body pump (whatever it is) will come in handy.

I'm 42 but feel 60 since 'camping out' in a damp and dreary NZ rental :(

I'm 53 and my partner is 48. So we're already geezers. Since we'll be too old to qualify for skilled worker immigrant status by the time we retire here in the USA, we'll probably end up living about 6 months a year in NZ on a visitor's visa, and 6 months someplace else (maybe Canada).

Best of luck to all the younger crowd who pack up and emigrate!javascript:emoticon(':clap')

I will be 48 tomorrow so now for the first time in my life my birthday is in the summer, a bit older than most who make the move , and no it wasnt a mid-life crisis that was three years ago , got the Harley and tattoos to prove it.
Dont let age put you off migrating as Kiwi employers seem to appreciate older employees as we tend to be more reliable and have the "old school" attitude to work and take less days off as "my kids are sick I need aday off" dosnt come in to the equation , my boss said he would only employ people 40 plus if he could as they are no trouble compared to the younger ones

We fell in love with NZ a few years ago after visiting and we thought about emigrating then but (those of you that finished University and then decided to travel the world before work, will understand this very well) we were broke.

We have now decided to stop putting this on hold and "go for it" and are hoping that we can move perminently in Nov 2006 (Just after we get married - Can't think of a better way to start a new life!!).
