I have a few questions on this if anyone could point me at some more information it would be appreciated.
2 quick questions. :P
First off, if I am eligible for this (being under 30) would that allow me to have my belongings shipped in GST free?
Anyone with experience with this? On a visitor visa we can't bring our goods into the country without GST. Trying to find a tricksy way to have our stuff shipped :D WITHOUT having to store it until a work visa or PR comes through.
Second, is their an age wavier application for this for people over 30?
Like to get my husband on the same length visa if I do decide to go this route.

I think if you have just applied for PR you can still ship your things, the company may ask for a bond against the possible GST though.

We are here in NZ on a 1 year WHV, and have not had a problem with bringing in belongings, no bond or GST. We are also hoping to get PR whilst here.
If your OH is under 35, then look at BUNAC, they will do visas for up to 35 year olds (This is the one I got!)

Just noticed that you are in the US, BUNAC is the UK scheme, but US may have a similar thing.

That's good to know. The US one is 1 year only (doesn't go up to 23 months like the UK one :( ) and it says 18-30. My husband will be 33 by the time we go. I may have to ask NZIS to see if there are age waivers for that. Would take care of a few small issues involved in us wanting to go while waiting for PR.

Here is a link for info on Importing household effects (http://www.customs.govt.nz/travellers/Household+Effects/default.htm)
Don't know of any age related excemption - and don't see any listed either.
The main point is:-
"You are coming to New Zealand with the intention and legal authority to take up or resume permanent residence"
But you need to check the other requirements to be sure.

I wouldn't think you could get an age waiver for a WHV. I've never heard of anyone being granted one.
Also you can't ship belongings GST free on a WHV, as it is not regarded a permanent visa - the main intention of the visa being a holiday, which you can supplement by working.
The customs website states:
"you are coming to New Zealand with the intention and legal authority to take up or resume permanent residence". As a WHV is only for one year duration, it isn't permanent residence.

Ah well.
May have a look at the BUNAC thing for my husband but we were planning to go on a 9 month visitor and take it from there. Thought, hey maybe a 12 month is a bit better than a 9 month if we can bring our stuff duty free. :o
Since not, then oh well.
I don't have much worry about being able to find employment or us getting PR. (Oddly?) We're just in a funny situation where we need to wait until March 2008 until we can claim 130 points with no job offer on the EOI.
Back to the old plan. Get on the ground in April and find a job offer from there to speed things up. If worse comes to worse one of us will end up with a 1 year work visa and the other with a student visa. ;)
