Trying to fill in the EOI for PR and I have been told yesterday by NZ immigration that although my job is in the long term and short term skills shortage and I have 10 years experience, I cannot claim the bonus points has I do not have a formal qualification in that area. Is this correct as it leaves me with 85 points instead of 100 which is needed to go for PR, therefore the the at moment it means the only option I have is the WTR route as my future employer is Accredited by NZ immigration
They also told me that under the WTR health care and secondary education is the same as PR but university and collage would incur international school fees which are pretty expensive has I have one child who is 17 and another who will be 16 when we go out and wants to go onto NZ A level equivalent, does anyone know if my 16 year old going to will have to pay international fees?
Help!!!!!!

Hi CiscoDave
Looking at your username - I'm taking an educated guess and thinking you are in Telecoms / Networking.
A Job offer - especially from an accredited company - will surely give you enough points to qualify for PR under the SMC.
I had a similar problem where Cisco and Juniper accreditation was not recognised by NZQA - unless the exams were taken in NZ......which is daft as it is the same exams no matter where you are.
So had to rely upon a job offer to gain PR for myself and my family - which was not a problem
Look carefully at your points and options - PM me if needed
Apologies if I'm off the mark on the career by the way!

Hi Kirk&Liz,
85 points is what they come up, made up as follows
Job offer 50 points
Age 45 10 points
experience in job 8 years 25 points
Total 85
What they would not give me was the extra points for :
Offer of job in future growth area 10 points
Experience in future growth areas 6 years + 15 points
Which would have given me a total of 110 points
they said it was because I did not have a formal qualification in my area and therefore I was unable to claim these points. What I find strange is that I cannot find anywhere on there web site where it actually says that

Hi CiscoDave
Do you have a HNC/Degree in any other subject that you can use to claim bonus points for having a 'basic recognised qualification'. This is what OH did. He has a HNC in Building but his experience is in IT.
Here's a link to our blog and a copy of our ITA - you can see what points we claimed. We ended up with 135 points.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

It is correct that you cannot claim those bonus points, the same thing happened to us. It's there on the website somewhere, you need to have the qualification in the area of the job/work experience that you claim.
As pinkpiggy mentioned, do you have a basic recognized qualification that you can claim points for?
Good luck!

PinkPiggy, thanks for your advice. I'm waiting to hear if NZIS will let me change round my EOI to use my HNC (in Computing) rather than my degree (only half in computing), to let me claim those much needed bonus points....
<< fingers crossed >>

NZIS are still maintaining that I do not have enough points to be selected, even though it calculates as 110 in the Points Calculator. I have asked them (politely) to explain, as I really don't understand where my calculations are going wrong....
Edited to add:
It seems that you cannot claim any bonus points at all, if you don't have a degree. So a relevant HNC, and 8 years of experience (in future growth AND absolute skills shortage) count for nothing?!?!?!?
PinkPiggy, how did you get in????

Hi Jane,
I am having the same problem, I have a job offer in the area of skills shortage and I cannot find out if I will be able to claim the bonus points for a job offer in a area of skill shortage which I need to get over 100. I have no formal qualifications apart for my secondary education. And I cannot get a sensable answer from NZIS. let us know how it goes with NZIS on the reason why.
Cheers

Here is the latest from NZIS:
I feel that you do not understand my explanations that have I been giving you. Even if you do have the 21 years relevant work experience, this does not help your cause. Please refer to the details that I have been giving you regarding our policy.
In order to get ANY bonus points you need a Level 7 NZQA Assessment. There is no way around this. You do not have this NZQA Level, therefore any bonus points you may have qualified for must be taken away. As outlined in my previous email, the selection criteria outlined that you either needed at least 140 points, 100 points WITH a Job Offer or 100/105 points WITH bonus points. You do not fall under any of these categories.
Again, you need an offer of employment if you wish to lodge your application.
So my calculation of 110 points is not valid. Job offer or nothing... bummer....

can you clarify are you claiming points for future growth area of Long term skill shortage list? They are slightly different . Future growth seems less tricky . See SM8.10 of the policy manual. http://www.immigration.govt.nz/nzis/operations_manual/6365.htm "
Skilled employment in one of the identified future growth areas set out above will only qualify for points if the principal applicant* provides confirmation from their employer, and an immigration or visa officer is satisfied, that their current employment or offer of employment is in one of those identified future growth areas." IT is included in the list as is Software & Computing Services. Dont know if you fall into that category. could your employer provide you with a letter as above? As far as I can tell this category does not have the same qualification requirements as LTSSL so you may be able to get bonus points for work experience and job offer. I assume that the job offer is in Auckland otherwise you could claim those bonus points as well
good luck

Don't forget your 10 points for working in a comparable labour market - I know that only takes you to 95 but only leaves 5 more to find instead of 15

Don't forget - you can't claim any bonus points at all, without a level 7 qualification.
I also asked about a WTR visa, but I am told it is exactly the same criteria as for skilled migrant, so no joy there either.

Hi guys,
This does seem to be area of confusion, I have been told different things by different people but I guess all I can do is put in my EOI and see what happens. I believe I should get the following points.
Age 45 10 points
Job offer 50 points
Job offer in area of future growth 20
10 years experience in area of job offer 30
that should take me to 110. Lets hope
Cheers

Yes, 100+ points with a job offer gets selected (http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/general/generalinformation/news/eoi101007.htm).

Hi Jane
We didn’t claim anything in relation to skilled employment. It was only in relation to Qualifications, Relevant Work Experience, Age etc. These are the relevant questions below. The only other thing I can think of is that I think the criteria/points changed recently but haven't updated myself as to what these changes were.
I would suggest trying to fill out the points indicator in a similar manner. If you want to send me some of your info I don't mind having a go and seeing what I can come up with??
Basic Recognized Qualification (HNC in Building NZQA assessed as Level 5) YES
No. Of years of relevant work experience : 10 years
Areas of Absolute Skills Shortage: 6 years or more
Work experienced gained in comparable labour market: YES
Age: 30-39
Would your partner be able to apply as principal applicant: YES
Partner’s basic recognized qualification: YES
Hope I have been able to be of some help.

Hi PinkPiggy, thanks for this.
I have run some more permutations through the points indicator, but it seems to come down to 2 factors:
- they will not let me have any bonus points for work experience in either Future Growth or Skills Shortage - as my qualification is basic and not full degree (not sure how you have managed to claim 6 years - but well done!!)
- you are also claiming points for a partners basic qual, and we cannot do that
It is so frustrating, but I think I've beaten my head against the wall enough on this now... I'm looking for a job offer and keeping my fingers crossed.
Thanks again,
Jane
