I thought I would put this here too.

I have applied to a couple of jobs through seek. Is it customary for them to send applications to fill out? One sent an automated reply, one personal reply and the last one was a personal reply with an application to fill out. Is this a good sign or am I just being too hopeful?

Hmm I thought Seek had an online CV that you could fill in, so that when you apply for jobs you just send it... could be wrong though.

I would say that any response is better than none... considering many who have applied from overseas get no reply or worse "see you when you get here".

You are right about seek. I applied for the jobs through them using my seek cv and a personalied cover letter. I expected the automated response, but not the others. One was in Hamilton, one for Napier and one for Tauranga. All places I would rather be right now.

Sorry Moorf,

thanks for the email. That's very intensive and thorough.

I have been using my personal CV and personal cover letter, and so far some companies are actually replied my email, however about the same thing..."the fact that you're not in NZ soil, makes it harder" so in conclusion, it is better if you are in NZ.
Good luck though....

when i apply through seek, i usually get an email response, but more often the HRD or personnel director send a more personal reply, and however they phrase it, always means "we'd rather have you get your visa/permit first before we consider you" or "come here to nz and we'll talk".

at least they respond.

but i'd rather they say ok, you're hired! hello, that would make me fly nonstop to nz!

good luck though, and keep trying, you'll hit gold soon.

I had one very positive response from one company in NZ. I was interviewed (by phone) and after my first interview, we had video conference. The company was keen on my qualifications but they opted for someone (new immigrant) who was in NZ.

I've not yet dealt with seek, i'll get round to them though.

and Yes, i am filling in forms, online interviews, Candidate briefs like there is no tomorrow. the only reason i have got this far, is because i have booked my ticket and could tell the agencies when i will be there. or the resonse would have been the usual.
"Thanks, but, see you when you get here".

Oh, one agency wants me to fill in a CV thier way, 6 pages long :eek

needs must. and do i need! :P

I got mine through Seek - granted I had been applying for stuff for 9 months without success, then I booked a ticket and applied for jobs 3-6 weeks before arrival so I could be included in the interviewing process.

I think it helps to think about jobs in NZ like a job here in the UK: think about the recruitment timeline:

Advertising the post: 1 week
Shortlisting and interviews: 1-2 wks

The succesfull candidate will then be offered the job but will have to give 4-6 weeks notice at old job - a total lead time of 10weeks (work permits can be sorted in that time)[/b]

funkstar, what do u mean by "work permit can be sorted in that time?"
when I talked to one of the recruiter, they said that it is better for me to have PR or work permit first to get a job. :?

xanctus. I think you may find it is that good old catch 22 situation again. You cant get a work permit without a job offer, and it is very hard to get a job offer without having a work permit (or PR).
If you get a job offer in place, I believe the work permit process is quite quick.
All the potential employers that have replied to my e-mails so far have said "we will talk when you are in NZ". But then I am in the building trade and nothing specialist, so =why would they offer me a job over a kiwi.

Rimbo

Xanctus.
If you have a job offer your PR status will be fast tracked.
You may even get a temp work permit (the terminology may be wrong in that statement) until your passport is stamped. this will allow you to work for your new employer, especiallly if they are on the accredited list.

I keep on coming to the same conclusion. Only time will tell whether (in Hindsight) i made the right choice. The voices in my head say
"You need to be there". So I'm going. Depends whether you want to chance it or not. I'll say it again as I've said it many times before (sorry folks for boring you). I don not have enough points to send off an EOI. I need a job offer then my points will be well over 100. Its a large investment in time as well as money to go over.
But now,
I have severed ties with my employer.
The house will go on the market this next week
I'm popping over looking for work
Bread knife and pan lid will stay at home until house sells.
If in that time i can't find an employer, i'll come home and polish floors in supermarkets and live in a caravan.

And like you Timbo, i wonder why an NZ employer would hire me over a Kiwi. Cos i'm fantastic.... thats why!

Timbo, they are so short of tradesmen over here it wouldn't be a case of offering you a job over a Kiwi but as well as a Kiwi. You really need to get over here.

I guess one of the reasons I'm trying not to be so hopeful is because they haven't said "no visa? talk to you when you arrive". They mentioned their shortlist and contacting me if I was selected to go on it. That one I can guess at. But the other one...I had a conversation (email) with the lady in hr. Actually quite funny. I sent her an email along with the cover letter and resume, explaining about my EOI, etc. She sent me back an email stating ..."I'm an Aussie, what is an EOI? I'm sure it will have no impact on your application." hmmm....hopeful?

Thanks for the encouragement Veronica. As soon as we can get shot of the house and so on, we will be on our way. Believe me, the time cannot
come around quick enough.
When I said "why should they offer me a job over a kiwi", what I was driving at was that I am stuck here in Uk and would not be able to jump on a plane without sorting at least somethings out first. Whereas someone on the ground in NZ (mostly kiwis) would be able to start right away.
From employers point of view, what is likely to be the best option?
If I had a skill that was in short supply (POL) then I think it would be different.
It is all pretty academic really, because we have decided that job offer or no job offer, we are going for it. We, unlike a lot of you folk, dont have the added worry of taking a young family with us. Just the two of us.
I will sell myself a lot better face to face with potential employers than I could do on a comp. screen or on paper.

good luck timbo i know you'll make it there (in nz). i really think we need to get over there as soon as possible, maybe to show the nz govt that we really want to be in nz. that's what potential employers need to know.

:cheers

This is one of the many replies I got...and they sound the same!

Quote:
"You may want to check out the '10 week availability' to start a new role from job offer stage - I am not aware of any employer who would wait that long for any employee to start a job - unless you are a specialist such as from the medical field where there is a chronic under supply of resource. You are competing with local candidates in your field, so employers could have someone within two weeks, not ten. Sorry, just being realistic."

So my conclusion is that I need to be in NZ soil and available at the snap of a finger! Or it is no go!

I am not on the field of chronic under supply and I am competing with the many Kiwis there who are available on short notice and who doesn't have things to sort out back home before starting their new job!

Being realistic is the key here I think.

Cheers,
Shagen

i am encouraged by the stories many of our forum friends post here when they say that they go to nz without a job, but within weeks of landing there they are able to get employment then choose a nice abode, and probably get a nice car...

so maybe it'll happen to us too.
