Well, two weeks after my contract finished and struggling to find worthwhile opportunities in Waikato I dropped a speculative email to my last boss.

He got back to me offering me a new contract starting today.

Cool. It's a slightly different type of work than I've done before, but it's a good opportunity to expand the skills on my CV, and a direction I was looking to move my career into, so all good.

It's only a one month contract but I know he has lots of other opportunities he is chasing to bring in more work and he seems to like what I have to offer and is keen to secure my services, which is great for me.

So, fingers cossed it turns into something a little more long-term, but it's good cash coming through in the meantime.

This time I'm working on a self-employed basis, so I'll need to understand all the weird and wonderful tax rules over here, so that'll be fun.

Good news, best of luck! Keeping fingers crossed for you that it turns into something more long-term and equally that you can figure out the weird world of self-employment tax returns! :)

It's not too complicated and quite self-explanatory. You can claim for a miriad of things though, so it's worth getting some professional advice. My accountant has saved me loads of money in the last couple of years by finding things I can claim for that I never knew about.

I would get an accountant, there is all manner of stuff you can offset and get tax benefits for from what I hear...

Good luck.
