Anyone shopped both US and NZ for kayaks? Wondering if it's worth purchasing a couple for the family in the US before moving (and shipping in the container) or just waiting till I arrive and supporting the NZ economy?

Have a look at Canoe and Kayak (http://www.canoeandkayak.co.nz/). They've got an online product catalogue so you can do some price checking. Most of the kayaks are made in New Zealand, so I don't think prices are too bad. Also, they'll often do package deals including a paddle, buoyancy aid etc. C&K have shops scattered throughout NZ so you should be able to find one nearby, wherever you end up. If you're heading for Auckland, definitely get in touch with the Auckland shop in Sandringham Road.

I've been looking for an entry level plastic touring (weekend) sea kayak. I think it will be just under $2000 NZD new, but I've been keeping my eye on trademe, hopeing to find something for $1000, but without much success. I'll probably end up paying 1200-1400 for a used one.

If you're buying 2 you should be able to get a better deal.

My partner is a hard core whitewater kayaker and it is very clearly better to buy in the US and bring them over. We brought 3 over. The selection in the States is way better and so is the pricing. But for lower end family types you maybe fine to get them here...

I would buy them in the USA--especially if you have room in your container. We regret not bringing ours and have yet to find a good replacement on TradeMe. Prices for new ones are a lot higher over here.
