We're down in Te Awamutu which is about a 25 min drive from Hamilton. As Cardy has mentioned there is Rototuna which is nice, but there are other area's which aren't too bad - Flagstaff, Silverdale, etc places to stay clear of are the likes of Nawton. Sorry can't shed more light on Hamilton, but i will ask the question, do you have to look at Hamilton, or are you prepared to seek locations beyond?

We too are in Cambridge at the moment and agree it is a lovely place to live. In fact this whole area is great. We are moving to Pirongia in December which is near Te Awamutu both are lovely.

It depends what your looking for really, we love rural.

Kim can I ask why you would avoid the likes of Nawton?

I'm trying to get a feel for the 'bad' areas and am interested in peoples different opinions of what is bad.

Thanks

Annette

Hi Annette

We are one of the families currently living in Rototuna and we like it. It's quite a new area of Hamilton with lots of building going on and it can also be quite expensive. We are in a lovely rental though.

Nawton is just very run down and I have heard there are lots of druggies around that area. I would definitely not want to live there. I would also avoid Fairfield for this same reason.

I would also avoid areas like Livingstone and Beeresecourt as these are quite close to the Centre.

If you like older properties then Claudelands is about 10 mins from the Centre and has got a good reputation. There are lots of other areas such as Hamilton Lake, St Andrews and Pukete that I don't know much about but they look like quite nice areas.

Moving out of Hamilton, as others have mentioned, there is Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Pirongia, Te Pahu, Newstead, Gordonton Village, Taupiri - the list goes on.

Going slightly further North and about 30-45 minutes away from Hamilton is Te Kauwhata which OH and I drove through not so long ago and thought it looked lovely. I have heard tell that Te Kowhai is nice too but don't have any first hand knowledge.

Hope this helps. If you need any more help just let us know. You could look at www.realestate.co.nz and www.trademe.co.nz/property to get a better idea of the types of houses available and the prices.

Thanks so much :)

I live in Cambridge, I can mainly only think of good things about it. By NZ standards it's an attractive, well planned town, with just one ugly commercial zone off to the side down a hill. There is a lovely park and lake in the middle. The shops and cafes are great and there is the best sushi bar ever (Kissu). The schools are nearly all very good. It's a shame the main SH1 runs straight through the middle, which can be noisy if you live near and can be quite busy especially on long weekends like this one.

There is a good gym with classes etc, and another one opening soon. There are 2 nice bookshops, lots of clothes, antiques, art shops etc. People are generally friendly and welcoming. There are a few boy racers, but they are only noticeable because it is so quiet most of the time. There has been an increase in burglaries recently, about 2-3 per week for the whole town, and some rural burglaries too.

There are 4 main primary schools in town, and more in the surrounding area, then a middle school and a high school.

Overall, it's great!

I'll PM with more questions, and thanks for the offer. We are really excited about the move - at least this time it's only 150KM!!
