Getting confused here about year groups! What year group would my kids go into if we arrive in NZ for Feb 08?
One was 12 (in Sept 07)
One was 9 (in Sept 07)
Had thought Yr 8 for aged 12 but maybe yr 9 which is first year of High Schools?

Hi Carey,
My youngest is a September birthday, which puts her in the middle-younger end of her year, compred with being the oldest in her years in UK system.
Generally (although there wil always be exceptions) the years follow the age banding of the UK, but seem odd to us brits because the academic year runs Feb to Dec not Sept to July.
Children finish primary school at the end of year six at age 11 here, like UK. Therefore, Year 7 is (broadly speaking) rising 12. THis is the first year of intermediate school. So, your older child will most likely go into Year 8, also Intermediate, and your younger year 5 in primary.
You need to speak to the schools involved as there might be other considersations such as giftedness or coming from a "hothouse environemtn" (sorry, it's only want of a better term) that has advanced them academically.
Good luck!

Is year 5 considered U.S. "5th grade"?
Is "Year 5" the fifth year in school, including kindergarten (in other words, is kindergarten considered "Year 1"?)? Or is it kindergarten then "Year 1" on completion of kindergarten?
My daughter was also nine in September and in US 4th grade now...

Found this information about how school years work in NZ, so you may be able to work it out from this?
In New Zealand, compulsory education begins customarily on each child’s fifth birthday whenshe/he enters a “new entrants” class. After that class, time spent in which varies considerably, pupils usually spend one calendar year (January to December) at each of year levels 1 to 13, typically turning 6 during year 1 and 18 during year 13.
From that info, have put together a list of age range v school year.
5- 6 = Year 1
6- 7 = Year 2
7- 8 = Year 3
8- 9 = Year 4
9-10 = Year 5
10-11 = Year 6
11-12 = Year 7
12-13 = Year 8
13-14 = Year 9
14-15 = Year 10
15-16 = Year 11
16-17 = Year 12
17-18 = Year 13
It does appear that there is some flexibility though in which year children are placed.
