I know that fishing gear must be thoroughly cleaned. But any ideas how to get waders really clean? Would just washing them with normal powder do it? And the rod?

I don't know if this will help but I currently work for a lab where the students do field work and collect frogs. To keep from spreading disease between sample sites via the mud and whatnot on their waders they dunk them in a low concentration of bleach (not more than 10%) solution and then give them a rinse.
I don't know, can you wash waders? I mean, they are waterproof, but seems like the machine and detergent might hurt them.

When in doubt ask MAF?

We ran our waders through the washing machine and just thoroughly wiped down all the rods. If things look clean and you can say you cleaned them, there should be no problems.

Use something with a lasting smell to wash them down with. Jeyes Fluid is a good one..
MAF are totally paranoid about the possible spread of Didymo at the moment, so are paying special attention to anything to do with freshwater fishing.

Your shipping company will be able to supply some kind of cleaning fluid that is MAF approved.
