the brethren are a religious group and when we took over the first premises we worked from here we followed them in, they were good to us but they have lots of strange restrictions. They don't use computers or faxes (but will get a fax sent from the people next door??) they won't eat or drink with people outside of their religion, the girls dont seem to be allowed to wear trousers and wear headscarves, no sex before marriage but the boys we have met seem to get through a lot of alcohol. best do a search on united brethren and see what comes up.

one of our suppliers is run by Bretheren, they use electronic typewriters, but look after their staff real well, they are very health & safety aware, and good honest folk. why do you ask?

I don't know if they're different from the ones in the UK but my OH did the odd job for them where we lived. He was asked not to use a radio & to stop whistling. He's a plumber & asking him to stop whistling was like asking him to stop breathing. In saying that, they were nevertheless pleasant to an outsider but they keep to themselves.

Hi Thanks for your responses...The reason I ask is because G may have job offers from companies ran by these faiths, so thought it best to have a research

Hi ,

we live in Rangiora north of Christchurch - lots of Bretheren Here - several of our neighbours are & they seem to like to party - good clean fun though - sometimes they sing songs untill gone 10.00 pm ! They dont actually speak to us but nod & smile .

certantly not a patch on the 55 year old born again raver we lived next door to in the UK  ( that woman aged me 20 years I think )

I had customers that were brethren (they sold up and emigrated). They were very pleasant, drove a hard bargain, could be difficult to contact cos they avoid modern technology (not Mercs, though), and payed their bills on the button. Some brethren can be poe-faced and joyless, in fact many of them can be, but they do pay well and look after their staff. It is literally against their religion not to. They believe it is their Christian duty to run a good business and employ people, as long as they don't want to listen to the radio or whistle......

Jade, I've worked with children, they were Plymouth Brethren, and their beliefs were as previously stated. The partner of a former colleague worked for a company owned by a Plymouth Brethren (sp?) family and he wasn't allowed a radio in his van.

best wishes, Carol
