Here's my next question;

I've just had another trawl through the NZIS website and looked at what I need to provide for work references. I have 18 years experience but most of the companies I worked for in the distant past are no longer trading. Therefore they cannot provide me with references apparently (even if I could find my old bosses).

My past 10 years' employers are still around but I am claiming points for 10 years experience and over. Will the 10 years references be enough to claim those points? (I'm on 145 so I don't want to lose any).

Also, are employers from 10 years ago usually willing to provide such references? I can just imagine harrassed HR staff filing my request under their 'can't be bothered' pile!

Thanks

Piper

This question was addressed by The Immigration people at the London Expo yesterday. In short, you only need to provide proof for the last 10 years no matter how much experience you are claiming. They realise that there are issues with companies ceasing to trade.

You can also do Statutory Declarations, and put togethr other evidence that you worked for companies, like wage slips, letter headed paper, we did this as 2 of my husbands companies that he worked for ( and got years of experience) no longer existed.

What I did, and Immigration was OK with, was to send paystubs and consulting contracts for the companies I had worked for. Many no longer exist. (Lots of "dot com" companies from the late 1990's and early 2000's).

Yeah, we did the same. A few of my companies ex companies no longer trade and he just provided payslips.......one from the beginning and one from the end of his period of employment with them.
The HR depts for the ones that still trade were remarkably efficient with one reference arriving the next day!!! and the others all arrived within a week

Have you kept in touch with any colleagues from the companies that are no longer trading? I have a similar problem, but have asked a former colleague to vouch for me (on headed paper from their current company). Someone on the forum suggested this to me, as it had worked for them.

You could try and track them down via Linked-In, that might help?

It works like friends reunited, but on a business-network basis.
