I'm already in NZ and my wife and young son will be flying out to meet me in a week or so. Preferred airline (Singapore Air) is fully booked until early November so we're looking at alternatives.
Does anyone know what transit is like at Hong Kong? In particular, what happens to bags in the hold (are they dealt with by the airport or do they need to be collected and re-checked?).
I flew with Air NZ via LA and apart from the queues at immigration found the whole transit experience quite straighforward. Didn't see bags between London and finally arriving in Auckland.
Thanks,
Stephen

We did it on the way to London, and we did not see our bags at HK. It is a lovely airport to transit in as there are things to do, we checked into a luxury lounge got a buffet lunch, drinks, somewhere nice and quiet to sit in a comfy chair, got a shower and a massage! Well worth it, think it cost about 30 pounds each.
It far more civilised than transit at LAX!

Many thanks for such a quick reply. Looks like we'll book via HK as baggage allowance isn't an issue.

When we flew out 2 1/2 years ago :D We stopped in HK, great airport very spacious and clean. We were only there about an hour, just enough time to get the kids off one plane and to the gate of the next.
The luggage should be checked through right to Auckland, so hopefully shouldn't see it in HK.

We went through four days ago and no luggage to deal with at all. We even left the airport for four hours and went into the city. Lovely airport, very helpful staff and very clean.

Hong Kong airport is brand new (well, less than 10 years old anyway) and very good. Last time through, I stopped off for a few days and found it to be a brilliant city. It's a cross between the chaos of Bangkok and the cleanliness and orderliness of Singapore and well worth a visit.

We stopped in HK when they had the old airport on the way to Aussie 10 yr ago. we did not see any bags.
We also left the airport and they had lockers which we checked our hand luggage into so we did not have to drag it about.
We had to pay a re entry fee which so little as we had left the airport. Not sure if they still do that.
