Follow-up question to the one I posted earlier regarding travel on Air NZ via Asia.

My wife and two year old son are travelling out to NZ next week via Hong Kong with Air New Zealand. They each get 20kg of baggage allowance that can be pooled at check-in. However, will my wife be able to bring a collapsable stroller and a car seat and still have 40kg between them? Or will the car seat be included in the baggage allowance?

I've read that the stroller is ok as it can be stored in the overhead lockers but the car seat is less clear.

Really interested in experiences from anyone that's done a similar journey recently.

The Air NZ website makes things a clear as mud.

Thanks

Stephen

We always have travelled with a stroller and a car seat without any problem and we have not included it in our luggage allowance although we have not flown with Air NZ.

Not sure if you are UK based but if you are why not give them a buzz 08000284149 they are there 24 hours. Hubby is flying with them in March and has found them really helpful over the phone.

We flew no problem with luggage up to 20kg each, then a travel cot, three car seats and stroller as extra. No one batted an eyelid. You can't always get the stroller put in the over head locker. From LHR to HK it was in the hold, asked at LHR for it to be brought out at HK. Then from HK to NZ it was in the overhead locker as there were lots of spare seats :)

Thanks sizzlingbadger.

Just phoned Air NZ and they've said that if checked into the hold they are included on the 20kg allowance. However, as the stroller can be taken on board and stowed in the overhead locker it's not. However, it does constitute the single piece of allowable hand luggage. As for the car seat, if taken on board for the child to sit in then it's not included on either allowance but if placed in the hold it's in the 20kg.

It looks like we might be ok if OH and son pool allowances to get 40kg between them and put cases and car seat into hold and stroller on as hand luggage.

fly emirates allow you to use a car seat and a stroller

I thought you had a carry on allowance as well that was weight based and not piece based...I travelled to the States on Air NZ with a baby carseat which popped into the stroller frame (2 pieces). The carseat went on the plane with me and the stroller frame got checked at the gate...but it wasn't counted in my checked luggage....I think it also depends on who you get to check you in and how good a mood they are in.....Good luck!

they should provide a baby cot for you. just call request one. If you have paid for a seat for the baby they you for sure can use the baby chair but if not it will depend on how crowded the flight it...

:raebanana ok thanks alot, the ticket price for me, my partner and baby is around R26,944-00 with fly emirates. it includes seats for the 3 of us and will it be ok if we buy a baby seat then put it on the seat that we have paid for? the baby will be 1 year 3 months old when we leave for new zealand so will it be ok to use the baby seat?

yes if you have paid for the seat for the baby (smart move I think) then you can use the baby seat. Make sure when you buy it that you buy one that is approved for airline use as not all of them are.
