As long as we keep getting "little" ones like that we're ok. It's relieving the stresses and reducing the chance of a really big one happening :uhoh
Saying that - they're still expected another new volcano to erupt somewhere in the Auckland region anytime around now :exit

It woke us up down here in Gore - I only felt one of them but it was enough to wake me up and I sleep like a fallen totara, nothing ever wakes me up.
We probably felt the second one as it was a lot shallower - I was quite excited as it was a real shove and jolt quake. And once I worked out that nothing would fall off the walls and onto our heads we just lay back and enjoyed it (at least, I did - it was the first proper earthquake Sian had felt so a bit of a curiosity there!)

laugh I am officially saying I have felt an earthquake now, I was sat having smoko at 10.20am and the monitor in Jeannenes office started wobbling, then I realised everything else including me was LOL:rol obviously it has to be a big one to rock my world ;) but Jeannene had to say we were having one! so i'd have probably ignored it and passed it off as my imagination!

I am completely hooked on the geonet site since experiencing our first quake a couple of weeks ago. I'm also completely paranoid now about every single creak in the house as I think it's the start of something big. Visited Nelson museum for the first time yesterday and that has made me even worse after seeing the photos of past quakes. Scary stuff. :uhoh

Is it wrong of me to WANT to experience a quake?
I feel guilty saying "Yeah... bring em on", as they obviously can be catastrophic and cause untold damage, and even if not that, can scare folk.
But all my life have been fascinated by anything to do with mother nature, be it extreme weather, tornados, volcanos, Quakes the lot. And since getting to NZ i have been longing to experience a suitable earthquake.
Am i bad person? lol
Should add obviously i would never want to see anyone hurt or anything damaged, but want to see what ol mum nature has up her sleeve!

Didn't feel the latest ones Dougie, although a couple in the early hours were apparently over 5.0 - but deep. Instead we enjoyed Mother Nature's light and sound experience as several storms came at us from the mountains - spectacular - a couple of times the lightning lit up the Alps in black and white, stunning.
The Waimakariri is completely swollen and amazing to watch and listen to - off back there later with hubby and dogs - just love the power of it all. Gigantic trees look like twigs as they zoom past in the brown swirling water.. :nice1 I'll try and get pics....
Joanne100 - I'd have thought you would have felt the biggie the other night - lots of reports came in from Chch on Geonet.
You'll have to put me in the "want to experience a biggie" camp, although the phrase "be careful what you wish for" springs to mind at the same time. :uhoh I love the power of nature be it waves, wind, quakes or storms - ohh to stand in a gale on a wave thrashed beach!
I was chatting with a few neighbours I met out on a walk with dogs yesterday and not one of them had an earthquake kit!! Their excuses ranged from "my larder is my kit" to "my stove will remain standing" !! We have one, of sorts, made many from items we got using Flybuy Points (including a neat portable gas stove!), but it's far from complete! Note to self: change water!!
I'd advise anyone in Smiler's locality to head to hers in the event of a quake - I believe she's won awards for her kit!! ;)

Wow....if I went out and bought all that stuff, OH would have a fit :o
Don't know how i'd manage to get out in an emergency with 3 teeny weenies and pack up emergency stuff too. Lets hope if anything does happen, the house is still standing. I have ttorch by the bed anyway (am I paranoid or what?) and got a gas cooking thing in kitchen cupboard and a lighter somewhere (reminder to self....get more fuel for blowtorch) plus plenty of food, some bottled water and medical kit & radio. Have a space blanket in my handbag in case i'm out somewhere and small medical kit and torch in the car too. That is about it I think. Hmm....maybe I should get some face masks? Do they come in child size?

Hi Family
I didn't go and buy it all, I used what we had, found something in the sales at the Warehouse or when I bought a new saucepan for instance, I put the old one in the kit. The sleeping bags form part of our camping gear anyway and the toiletries I bought one thing every shop and so on.
The first thing you'll want to worry about is the kids, so it makes sense to have anything you need all in one place, rather than scattered about the house. If you pack away some of your oldest's childs clothes when they grow out of them, at least you'll have something to change them into, it really doesn't matter if they are stained or old, just so long as they are warm. Our kit is in a old wheely suitcase in the garage. There's only two of us, so it's much easier than having littlies to think of as well!
I may sound anal about this sorry :D We live out in the sticks so a generator is essential for us anyway, you might not need one in town where there are other people around or community centres you can get too. In the 2004, when Manawatu and lower Wanganui was badly flooded, the emergency services didn't get here for 8 days. We didn't live here then, but have seen the pictures and heard the stories and intend to be fully prepared IF it did happen again, just as we were prepared living on the faultline in Wellington.
Can you believe that the emergency services could not find this road as it wasn't on their map?!? We now all have Rapid numbers and have been to the police control centre for a demonstration of their new equipment, so we know they'll find us eventually!
I'm sure your OH would be ok as preparation is the key. We do have warning systems in NZ but the only people that are going to help us in the first few days after a disaster, is us! :nice1

Claires family never felt a thing in Haydock either. I have felt minor ones before but this really shook our house. It felt like the floor turned to liquid and knocked loads of books off their shelf. I found it quite exhilerating. No damage but I think the car had moved slightely as the breaks were locked on in the morning.

I found a couple more things afterwards. One of my planters had moved away from the front of the house. Even worse, my pudding bowl had flipped over onto its side. Luckily it didn't break or I'd have nothing to help me cut our hair.:D

One of my friends just sent me a quote from the Speak Your Branes blog, where they'd copied across a message from someone on Have Your Say, saying
that things fell from his shelves. “I was woken up. It was hell.”
Some humourist replied:
I thought hell was supposed to be an awful place of infinite torture, but if its actually a place where some things fall off a shelf once every 25 years I’m going to go back to killing hookers.
