Just to reassure me! I need a job offer to keep my ITA afloat, and am applying for jobs on a daily basis. There was a thread running on a different forum, which has worried me a little, suggesting that you need to be in NZ to have a successful interview.

To keep my hopes high, can anyone reassure me that YES they did have an interview (phone / VC) while still in the UK, and YES they did secure a job offer?

I can't really afford to fly down under at the moment on a recce, but if that is what it takes....

<< fingers crossed >>

Jane

Hi Jane, I'm afraid I did not. But with the right skillset, employer, and charm, definitely seems possible. Bonne chance!

Hi Jane

My experience was that 99% of agents/company's told me to contact then once i was actually in NZ, however i have heard of people actually landing jobs while not in NZ, but they seem to be in the "super high extremely skill very shortage list"

sorry no news you want to hear. keep hammering away, there is a skill shortage in NZ

on the up side, i did get a offer on paper within 2 weeks after sending my stuff out, and the interview was at the auckland office and the job is in wellington and i was in christchurh, company paid air tickett to auckland ...

Hi Jane,

Yes it is possible. I met up with a company at the Expo in March, followed that up by emailing them a CV that they had requested. Job offer came shortly after that and I have yet to visit NZ.

So it is possible. Good Luck.

Hi Jane,

I had several telephone interviews here in the UK and was offered more than one job so it is possible. I start work in NZ next month. Was quite nervous until all the paperwork arrived - but it all looks in order. Maybe it makes a difference depending on what type of job you are going for - I just have to have a face-to-face meeting when I arrive (I guess to double check I am who I say I am and that my qualifications are genuine).

My circumstances are different to yours in that I plan to go on my work visa and see what happens from there. I think I have read on here of other people doing that though.

Good luck with the job hunting

Hi Jane,

Yes I accepted job and am now getting my prof registration which is dependant on an exam I am taking on Friday!

The company are happy to wait, the job offer is ongoing. I did tell them when I met them that I would not be in a position to move to NZ until next year.

Regards

Helen

I had a phone interview in the UK that was arranged by an agency. I got a call the next day fromthe agency offering me the job and the contracts were in the post the next day. Admitted the Hospital were actually here inthe UK actively seeking staff but still I was well surprised & pleased to have been so successful with my first job application. So it is possible. :)

Hey Jane
I wasn't applying for jobs thank goodness but hubby did and was interviewed by phone for one and video conference for another. He got offered both jobs, we accepted one and we are still in UK trying to sort out getting there now. I suppose he has reasonably specialised skills but did take quite a few applications to various folks before interviews came up. Some folks didn't entertain him cos he wasn't in NZ at all and it took a lot of searching because no recruitment agency really had contacts in his field.

So yes worked for us but takes a lot of time.
Best of luck

OH made contact with several companies at London Expo last year. He had telephone interview with one a couple of days later and was offered a job by end of week. We did not move to NZ for a good 6 months after this as I was pregnant at the time. So YES, it can be done. If you make contacts at the Expo's they fully expect that it will take some time for some people to arrive in NZ.....they wouldn't spend all their money recruiting overseas if they were not prepared to wait for right candidates!

What area of work are you in?

Oh well done Ramblingpaddies OH had to do that to for job he got - have you done it before?? Took him about two hours on-line and think he found it quite taxing and didn't have calculator and needed it for last section I think. PM me if you need any info and I'll get OH to get back to you

Good luck

I DID!

did two phone interviews with my present employer and they where happy enought to fly me out and pay accomodation, so it is possible, i guess it just depends on what employment you are looking at and the current market.

good luck

Me too, but I waited 10 years for the right job to come up!!!! So it did seem to be impossible to me for a long long time.

However, I was recently offered a job after one telephone call that didn't even seem to be an interview & my employer-to-be didn't even bother talking to anyone else.

Now he's feeling very intimidated because, like everyone says, highly skilled people are few and far between in NZ and he's worried that the work won't be up to MY standard!

Anyway, he's prepared to give it a shot and so am I, and we'll both get what we want from the arrangement - that's work, I guess!

Good luck and hang on in there - with a positive attitude anything's possible!
