I'm reading through the info right now, but have a few questions.
Do we need to apply for a vistor visa (NZIS 1017) or can we just use the holiday visa to stay and find a job?
On the visitor visa PDF file it has "this form can be used by a single applicant or a family - with dependent children under 20 -". My daughter is 22 so will she have to fill out her own form?
Something else I'm wondering is - if you have a visitor visa or holiday visa do you have to leave NZ and come back? ("The date you will enter or re-enter NZ)
And what about the full medicals? Can you get them done in NZ?
TIA
:)

From what I understand some countries have a 3 month visa that doesn't require formal application (you fill out something on the plane and they stamp you when you arrive. Suitable for short visits and fly throughs). You should (being from the UK) also be able to apply for a longer visitor visa. On a visitor visa you must either have a return ticket or proof of funds if your visa is for too long to get a return ticket. I would imagine that if you go on a 3 month visa and you have a ticket to return in 6 months they would make you buy another ticket :p
I don't know what to say about your daughter.
Also from what I understand if you don't either change your visa type (to work or something that lets you stay longer) or gain PR while on a visitor visa they will expect you to leave.
I do think you can get medicals in NZ.
Hope that helps.

bkymonster is correct, i am from south africa and i dont require a visa for holiday. medicals can be done in new zealand at a cost of around $200. we are going the easy way which is a 3 month holiday then we will extend our stay there for a further 3 months until i get a job offer which will be in 2 weeks once i touch down in nz. you are secured a job if you are there in the country, most companies want you in the country when applying.

patrick, medicals are a bit more expensive then that, $400 per person, at the current exhange rate of about 5 rand to the NZ dollar, you looking at R2000 per person. Rememebr that since you from south africa, it you have had any signs of having had TB or have TB you will be on the next plane out, no questions asked. Same goes for HIV.
As things go with the world economy, you should budget at about 5.5 or even 6 rand to the nz dollar by next year.
Next please keep in mind if you land here with a return ticket that has a return data later then 30 days from when you landed, they going to ask you real "sticky" questions, and you might find yourself on the next plane home.
Then they ask how you going to support you and if u unlucky they WILL as you to prove the fact that you have money, and that is 1000 nz$ per person per month, ie R5000 oer person per month.
You plane tickets return to NZ from RSA is going to cost you around R25000 atleast, and that is from JHB international, from durban add another R1000.
to get to NZ you looking at atleast R30000, trust me on that one.
you are not guaranteed a job, nobody is, not even if you on the skill shortage list, it still depends on companies if they can afford to employ you.
Last but not least, no matter where you stay, you still need about $200 (R1000) a week to support yourself.

thanks brianw, i wrote those down. we have recieved a requirements list from our friend in auckland, he was previously from durban then he and his family went the 3 month holiday way and stayed at his cousins house, its now 1 year 8 months and they are granted pr. we are going to stay at a family friend in auckland, she said that i must send my paper work to her 1 month before i leave and she said that by the time i get to new zealand she will have already organised a few job interviews for me. we have looked up on fly emirates site and the price for us will be around R26,944.00 for me, my partner and our baby on a return flight. my cousin are leaving the exact same way as we are, they are leaving in january 2008 and they are going to the same lady that we will be going to. we have set aside R10,500.00 as our money to prove that we have extra finance, our family friend in auckland has already opened up a bank account for us at westpac bank in nz and they only wanted a copy of my id and her address. she has deposited $2000 as a help to us. she told us that when we pass customs department we must just walk with ease as she will pick us up from the airport when we land. it is only gods favour that we are experiencing. with regards to medicals, we have 2 options, either going to st augustines hospital or entabeni hospital ( private hosp. in sa) or we can get a letter from a doctor and take it up to new zealand and when there we must go and do a check up for employment. i have friends in the police force here in sa, they told me some info that gets done from sa government. if anybody knows more please inform me as i need to get lots of info before i leave...!!! brianw, thanks bro for the info.:clap

As a British citizen, you can go without a visa and stay for six months. Don't need to apply for anything.
Medicals can be done over there, cheaper than in the UK.

Yes, that's what I meant, medicals in NZ are cheaper than in the UK. I should make sure I get my references (the 'here', 'there', 'over there' etc) clearer :)
