We have decided to ship all our belongings with us, and are buying a new fridge freezer and dishwasher. Are there any brands that are better than others with regard to future need of repairs once we are in NZ?

I know is that Fisher and Paykel are the service agents for Whirlpool if thats any help! But not sure if you would have to buy the exact model thats sold here.

There is also Westinghouse which are actually Electrolux.
Also Bosch, LG and Miele as well.
If you find a particular model that you want to buy, then you could ask if the warranty / servicing is possible in NZ.
Not sure that I would buy a new dishwasher in the UK as they are pretty standard in NZ and will almost certainly come with the house (chattels).
Also, although it is possible to buy wide (american style) fridge freezers in NZ, they won't fit many of the fitted kitchens.

Hi Cath,
We purchased a brand new front loader Bosch washing machine in UK and brought it with us. Being the good girl that I was I declared it to Customs and we ended paying approx $150 GST to bring it in. Its now sitting in our garage as its too wide for the space in the laundry! At least the top loader washer came with the chattels when we bought the house so at least I can wash our clothes! Do bear in mind that top loader washing machines are very popular over here and tend to be narrower than front loaders. If you can compare measurements on the internet before purchasing I'd recommend it.
We also brought our (used) Bosch dishwasher with us (no cost to bring it in) but as mentioned by others they do tend to be pretty standard issue in most kitchens here and are almost always sold with the house as part of the chattels. Ours is also sitting in the garage as the fitted kitchen in our house came with two Fisher & Pykl (sp?) dishwasher drawers, which so far I'm not over enamoured with but thats another story! :roll
We didn't bring our fridge with us as frankly we wanted a bigger one and we were worried how well it would travel. Although we've got a pretty wide space in the kitchen for a fridge/freezer its not very tall (cupboards over) so are being limited in what we can buy.
Hope all this helps,
Anneliese

Fisher & Paykel are made here, and make some of the other brands under license I believe. F&P owns the Simpson brand, and make Whirlpool for the NZ market. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Buy the stuff when you are here. If you get a few items at once you can negotiate a very good deal. I researched the makes and models I wanted and faxed a list to all of the local outlets (with a full list of the outlets at the top, so they knew they were competing) for quotes. It saved us nearly 20%.

Hmmm... I have been looking at property on the internet, and had noticed that dishwashers were often included, but hadn't realised that spaces for washers may be different, I had also noticed that the space above fridge freezers often had a cupboard, but thought that maybe they can be taken down if needed - we have recently put a new kitchen in were we live, along with a lot of other diy, so will not be phased by any diy to come. I think if we come across a bargain and the make is one that is popular in NZ, we will probably take a gamble.

We did not bring any white goods with us. Turned out to be a blessing as none of them would of gone into the kitchen here. We bought Fisher & Paykel
everything. First time I have had a top loader and i love it. We have also raised the Tumble Dryer (not that I use it much at all) so no bending down at all anymore.
