No we're not going back to the UK, but we are leaving New Zealand.
OH has accepted a job offer that would have been quite difficult to refuse so we're off to Oz.
Thanks to his new employer, things are moving quite quickly so we will probably be leaving within a month or so.
All that's left to do now is sell the car, book the shippers, de-clutter, sort out the direct debits, make endless lists.......oh well, we've done it all before, so we can do it again....:laugh
Will update our progress - so if you're interested enough - watch this space........:D

Hi guys,
You just do what all the kiwis seem to do - or want to do: just cross the ditch!
I have been looking into this as well, but it seemed even harder to get a residency there than it is in NZ. Will you be able to get residency easier over there with a job at hand?
Good luck in Oz,
Anita

it will be a walk in the park moving over the ditch.... compared to other side of the world!
Whereabouts you going then???

17th October 2007, 09:28 PM
Oooh I wish I knew how to do those multiple quote thingies !!
We will be living in Melbourne Lupin.
As far as residency goes Anita, all I know is that if all goes according to plan, we could have our Oz residency within 6 months through OH employer and Oz PR would entitle us to work and live in NZ too (as opposed to NZ citizenship being the criteria to enable you to live and work in Oz) I don't know any more than that 'cos I haven't looked into it - haven't had the time !! It's all happened so quickly.

We were in Melbourne earlier in the year, and found it awfully busy, but a nice city, my friend has lived there for a couple of years now and loves it.
It gets pretty weird weather, and you had better get used to short showers! :)
Good luck

Yes Sal you're quite right, we found the city very busy too.
We will be living and working in one of the suburbs, so for us we feel that we've got the best of both worlds really - nice, quiet, leafy suburb with all the amenities you could want on a daily basis and the proximity of the city (about 35 minutes drive away) when we/if we need it......:D

I'm interested too Julie!!
Melbourne is a fab place - although visiting there on the way back (straight from NZ) I felt like a hick from the sticks, I just wasn't used to the crowds or big city feel :laugh Hubby and I did say though that it had a great feel to it and if we ever got the chance to live there I think it would be too good to refuse.....
All the best and keep us posted.

which end of Melbourne are you going to? We were at the Brighton end mostly with my friend (south east)...
zardell
18th October 2007, 07:20 AM
To the east near the Dandenong Ranges - not to be confused with Dandenong the suburb.
We have friends who live on the Mornington Peninsula and we thought it was really nice around that area too.

Good luck Julie. Lived in Sydney before and loved it. Must say Oz is definetly in our thoughts at the moment (just a few more months to get NZ PR first though). Worth checking out the 457 visa rather than PR initially - you can get some nice tax breaks down this route. I worked under an umbrella company who did all the tax side for me - can PM the details if interested

Wow Julie, never expected that one. Just when i got here and had you on my list of forumites to pop round for a cuppa too!
Still excellent for you and family, sure you'll love it there, not been to Oz yet myself, but its on the list to visit.
I would go and work there but going under floors and into loft with those killer spiders really doesnt appeal to me! LOL
Have a stressless as possible time packing up the bits, and you will have a ball. Dont be a stranger.
Oh, and do send over some warm aussie weather eh, starting to wonder if NZ wetter than UK even! lol And finally, please mention the rugby results to them as much as possible!! :laugh :laugh

Wow Julie, what an exciting turn of events :nice1 !
As it happens, there may be a tiny, potential inkling of this in our future as well (very premature as yet), but I would have to say that although I've always had a 'thing' for Australia, after nine months here I think I would find it hard to leave NZ 'for good'. Ah well, we'll see what the future has to offer...
Wonderful how life works out sometimes, isn't it :clap?
Anyway, wishing you good luck with the move and all the best with a bright, happy and healthy (and probably warm !) future for you and yours. Take care and please do let us know how you're getting on !

Congratulations about the move!!! We're moving too (to Sydney) and as we tell our kiwi friends, colleagues and random people we meet about it, the overwhelming majority say "good on ya", "wise choice", "i wish i could move too". I just don't get it, if you're a kiwi, what stops you from moving?!? Just pack up and go! What is so good about moving to OZ? Why don't they move if it is so good?
Anyway. Few questions here. Are you aware of a similar forum for people settling down in OZ? I looked around and found a few, but nothing really as helpful and lively as this one.
Also, are you aware of a website that would be similar to trademe? I had a look at ebay and gumtree and it looks like cars and property and everything else have their own trading websites, so there's no really one huge online marketplace where "all ozzies buy and sell"? Or have you found one?
And just out of curiosity, are you moving on work visas 457 or as PR? We're sitting on our bums waiting for the paperwork to go through (for work visas) and as the days go by the move feels more and more unreal. Any indication on how long it took you to arrange visas would be very very welcome!
