went to nz hs today and learned a few bits -
selected sept 29 will recieve invite over next few weeks. interviewing 1200 applicants 'as soon as possible' so hunker down.
if applying for pr through skilled cat you MUST take a full-time job for pr. if you start your own biz, even if you are responsible for half nz gdp, you cannot gain pr this way. bit of disappoinment! apparently can go business route simulaneously as sm. as she put it - sm cat is there to bring employees to employers - looked alarmed at idea we were interested in doing something new (even with back ground). intersting.
once things get moving we are to expect 4-6 months processing (without job). non-jobbers are low on totem pole.
job qual - if employer not playing ball and you didn't have formal contract to prove exp/employment you will be able to show pay stubs etc.

Leslie,
I think the information they gave you is slightly misleading. The fact is that you can get PR without a job, people have done so, once you have PR there is no requirement to proove employment in any area, you have the right to stay in NZ indefinately.
If you don't have enough points without a job though, that would be a different story, perhaps that is what they mean?

Sort of related, something that has intrigued me recently is how NZIS will assess EOIs selected up to and including Dec. 8th, by some time (end? middle? can't recall) in February. Has anyone from Oct. 13 or 27 drawing had a status change yet, for example?
I'm not doubting NZIS' word - I just wonder whether they are going by the decrease in EOI totals that charcaterized the post-Sept drawings; whether they have their system down pat now given the large numbers of EOIs and are getting through them quickly; or whether extra staff are now coming on board.
Cheers,
Matt.

i hauled ass to nz to be sure info was correct but maybe not? we have more than enough points (125) so that isn't it. this is what worries me a bit - there seems to be a somewhat loose interpretation of the info avail. as we are about to put house on market we were hoping for a little concrete info ...
mark - you are doing the no-job routine and seem to understand things. all okay? you comfortable??? any concerns? stupid to worry?
everything i read at nz house mentioned how the economy is strangled by lack of addit workforce/ development so found it a little hard to understand how officer was being so 'choosy'/ pro jobber and how they could progress non-job applicants so slowly. am already struggling with the apparent anti-self-emp attitude. maybe we should just buy a macdonalds and add to nz health service woes thru the back door in revenge ...
as for timelines - apparently they worked over hols for the first time ever. so maybe they will make target or at least progress respectable time-frame. she advised to get pack back asap to try and beat the mass-return that is inevitable. not sure about that october pool by late feb bit - perhaps too optimistic.

Hi Leslie,
After reading other people's experiences who have not had jobs I'm not too worried. Having said that I am not normally a risk taker so do have concerns, because of uncertainty over the whole move decision not the lack of a job in particular. I am sure I want to make the move, it's just the "what if" thing.
Take a look at the following thread on the interviews for people without job offers:
http://www.emigratenz.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=982&highlight=telephone+interview
I think we've all seen the various opinions from NZIS and the way they conflict, just hope for the best. :hopeso :hopeso :hopeso

Leslie. It may well be worth your while contacting Jamie Smith for the inside track on business set up leading to PR.
It is NOT impossible by any means, but it is long winded, just ask Veronica.

Just to add that we were pulled on 13th Oct and had first call from NZIS yesterday - it was a query about my degree......which may cause a few sleepless nights......but at least it was contact and means our EOI is out of the "pile"and on someone's desk :P

Jamie smith is a business visa specialist. He recently relocated to Oz from Nz and has not been seen here for a while. If you search through the members list, you can get contact details including e-mail from there.
To save you the bother...

this is his company. As the web site is part of his profile, I reckon it is safe for me to post here.

Neil - interesting. Thanks. If it's something you don't mind discussing on the Forum, was the degree question anything to do with the sort of matter we've been discussing in the recent thread 'Degree Actually Awarded by Recognized University?"
Cheers,
Matt.

On a general note, everyone:
I don't know about you but -- never mind a 2-yr WTR permit -- some days I think I'd happily accept an NZIS offer consisting of a quarter-pound of cola pips, two Taggart videos, and a deck of Lombard Rally Heroes trump cards.
Cheers,
Matt.

Matt,
No - the question they raised about my degree was that it was in "Hotel & Catering Management", but I am claiming work experience points for general "business management". I understand the question over the link between the 2, but as the degree was delivered by the Business School at the Univ, I am arguing that it was a general business degree looking at a specific industry.
I have a letter from the Course Director explaining that and I have faxed it into the London office, so hopefully will hear today if that suffices, or if I will need to get more details!

Neil - thanks so much. Very encouraging that your degree was from the Business School, don't you think? Here's to your application!

Leslie,
Try not to worry too much. Many applications were processed before ours that were selected after, it just depends what happens to the pile at NZIS I think. They will get to you, there's just little point trying to understand the logic, as I'm not sure there is any.
If you are worried give NZIS a ring, I called them a few times when we were in your position.

will try not to be logical... will try not to be logical... will try not to be logical...
would have been 100% better had we been told 6+ months from outset. we were told 2-3 so progressed quickly in every way - incl mentally. for oz we were told 2 years so we felt quite differently. limbo will be v expensive. in every way. newbies should be told 1 year and then it will be a nice surprise if it comes in under the mark.
...................... i grew up in north a. during days when if you sat on your ass you fell on your face. must slow down..... must slow down....... must slow down...... and soon it won't be a choice - how cool is that?
going to spend some time on biz site. cheers!
