Hello,

When I arrive in New Zealand I need to show i have $4200 NZ dollas and enough for a plane ticket home. What form does this proof need to be? Travelers checks or cash. And can it be in american dollars or do I need to convert before I get there.

When we did it we just had a bank statement printed off the day before showing a balance big enough. We had credit cards and internet banking so shifting the money would be easy. I think you just have to show that you have access to the funds. We weren't even asked, anyway.

It depends on what visa you're on upon arriving to NZ. If you're on a visitor visa, then the amount of funds available is dependant on the duration of stay in NZ - the time it can cover any foreseable hospital expense. I do not beileve you can fly to NZ on a 1 way ticket thinking you are only going for a visitors visa. The return dates on your ticket is proof to the boarder officer that you have intentions of flying out of NZ.

But the previous post is right - a photocopy of your bank account that has sufficient funds is A OK!

Having enough funds to purchase a return ticket is not acceptable to NZIS:no . You must have a return ticket when you arrive at immigration if arriving as a visitor.

I'm going on a one year student visa and have the same problem. I can't buy a ticket back yet because you can only reserve 330 days in advance, and I hate to buy a one-way ticket I'll never use since I plan to find a job when I graduate and stay. My degree is in secondary teaching, so it is on the shortage list. I am supposed to show NZ$10,000 for living expense, plus enough for a ticket home, but they aren't 100% clear on what amount is enough to show you can buy a ticket home and whether that's really acceptable. What does everyone think? I'd hate for them to issue me the visa and tell me no worries, and then get stopped at the border.
