After all these weeks of whingeing about how impossible it is to get a teaching job without being there etc, I've just got an e-mail from a school where I applied recently saying they want to arrange a video-conf interview - and if not audio will do. Well, here in dial-up city mid-Wales, I suspect (and hope) it will be the latter 'cos I've never done VC before (too much like Star Trek for my liking!

Oooooh when is it? Have you got one of those hotel conference places near by? Maybe you could arrange to use the conference facilities if you are really keen. I'd prefer audio too though. :o

Good luck and let us know how you get on. :nice1

Much easier than face to face....you can have all your notes out on a table in front of you. Plus the delay gives you time to think.

Think of it this way: it beats paying all that money to fly over for an interview!!! Congrats that they are willing to talk to you long distance. This is great news (but I'd be nervous, too!!!!)

You'll be fine...good luck!

Lockstock it will be fine. I had my interview by VC and it's much easier than face to face. One tip though, we had never used it before and the council lent my techie the equipment to set up in school. The camera was in front of me and the screen beaming the head master was a little to the left. He asked me to look at the camera instead of him as it appeared to him that I was squinting! :o

His tip was to have the a TV screening him with the camera on top. That way I'd be looking directly at him! Even after all that he gave me the job, must have felt sorry for the trauma he'd put me through! :roll

I hope all goes well for you lockstock.

My new employer-to-be in NZ was surprisingly nervous about the whole telephone interview thing too and he told me afterwards that he found it to be like some kind of weird internet dating scenario (although he'd never done that before either!)

The worst part, I found, was when he said "Okay, I'll have a wee think, bye then."
I haven't a clue what I said to convince him, and he was still pretty nervous when he offered me the job the next day - woohoo!!

Hope it's woohoo for you too...

Good luck lockstock, hope all goes well. I hate interviews, for the job I have just got I had 3, one with an agency, then one with my boss who wasn't quite sure so he wanted me to see his boss. I was supposed to then do all the psycho testing but they couldn't arrange them before my start date so they don't know that I am a pyscho yet!!!

mmmm, OH feels it was OK, but unfortunately no posts at moment. They will keep in touch, Back to fingers crossed status - makes typing tricky :exit

Oh that's disppointing Mels. 3.20am and insomnia at full whack. No sign of e-mail stating time of call. I keep looking at the original e-mail to see if I made a mistake but, no, he's going to arrange an interview. Need sleep. Work in the morning. Roll on half term. Movers coming Monday. Nowhere near ready...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Way-hay! Is it the Taumaranui job?

For my telephone interviews, I mostly wore a pair of PJs and had a glass of wine as an accessory. They went very well.

lockstock

Not the Taumarunui job. It's in Hamilton which is fine but we'd started imagining ourselves there (and we're practising pronouncing the name like mad!) The closing date for that one is in mid-november so plenty of time.

I wore my pyjamas for my phone interview - always feel uncomfortable in a suit; and the smile on my face knowing I was interviewing in PJ's hopefully came across over the phone! :D

An update...and more aaaargh! I thought I could get away with a phone call because we're on half term next week and time has run out to sort out the school's VC room. But I've just had an e-mail from the Head asking if and when I will be able to make it to a hotel off the M42 for a VC interview and he's going to phone me first to talk generally about what will be happening.
I'd love to reveal the location but I have just visualised several forumites waving their avatars in the background (remember the Full-Monty interview) - :laugh and I can't take the risk!

So next week, my half term's 'break' will constist of: Monday Tuesday Wednesday movers packing house; move to friend's house for two months with skeleton wardrobe (oh yes, didn't tell you friend broke her neck in a riding accident last Sunday did I?);Thursday/Friday visit daughter in Lincoln via M42 hotel for job interview; Saturday and Sunday....who knows????

Well, thats brilliant news! (not the bit about your friend though :()

They are really bothering to organise this interview, which is great. :nice1

I'll come and wave my rose tinted specs around in the background and make those little bunnies out of my hands, to dispel your nerves and entertain the head!

Don't forget to pack into your skeleton wardrobe something interviewy to wear. You can get away with just the jacket if you are sitting at a table ;)

Good luck and I'm looking forward to hearing how you get on.

But it's not at the forefront of my mind today - packers coming tomorrow and my head has just exploded.:exit

Well, it's all set up for 9.30 Thursday morning UK time at a conference centre in the Midlands (only a two hour drive from here:roll ) The head phoned me yesterday at 8am (he thought it was 9 am but I was a step ahead ha!) just as the movers arrived - bubble wrap in one hand and sticky tape in the other. It costs and arm and a leg to hire the centre so I guess they're quite keen. Now if only I could remember what I wrote in my application....
