Hi, My husband and I arrive for a 'scouting' trip late November and he has a recruitment test on Friday, November 30 in North Palmerston at 9.30am. We are staying at Lake Taupo on the Tuesday and Wednesday. Has anyone got any suggestions for somewhere to stay on the Thursday night which is no more than about an hour's drive to his appointment.

I know we could just book a motel in Palmy but are trying to make it a holiday as well as business so somewhere worth a visit nearby would be nice.

You'll have about a 3 hour drive from taupo to palmy, on the way down you will pass Gravity Canyon (if you're up for a bit of extreme sport like bungy jumping or the flying fox!)

You will also drive down through Taihape with the giant 'gum boot', we've never actually stopped here, but it looks a nice little town. Thats about an hour away from Palmy.

If you wanted to be near the sea, Foxton or Himitangi are only about 30 minutes away from Palmerston.

Depending what time hubby finishes his interview you might want to have a trip down to Wellington only a two hour drive away!

Thanks Marcia. As he has an early start on the Friday and we don't know the area we decided not to take a chance and got a 'wotif' deal with the Novotel which is in the same street as the office where he has his interview. It means he can walk to the test in the morning and I can have the car to do a bit of exploring.

The tips are really useful though as we will be taking a leisurely drive down from Taupo the day before and will stop off at the places you mentioned (not sure about the bungy jumping through, it's taking all the diazapam I have to get me on the flight over!!!)
