Hi,

Just a quickie.... see the police reports, you just need someone that's known you for a year to counter sign it don't you ? It doesn't HAVE to be a doctor, solicitor etc does it?????

ehh, not sure what you mean. We didn't have anyone countersign our police reports. Or anything else for that matter

Don't think it's required.

If they are originals then no-one needs to sign them as far as I know.

Millie

The police sent my application back because I got a work colleague to countersign it. The police actually telephoned her to check on who she was and then sent the form back to me. So then I got my boss to sign it - he is a council member so they accepted him as being an upstanding member of the community.

I think a doctor, bank manager, solicitor etc are preferred.

Sandra

PS The annoying thing was that I actually phoned to check with them that she could countersign and they said it was fine as long as she had known me for more than a year. :no

Can I ask what this is, I didn't have to get anything countersigned for my check, should we be worried?

Didn't you fill out an application form to apply for your police report? Both Dave's and mine had to be countersigned by somebody else.

We have done police checks twice now (dont ask) and have not had to get anything countersigned. Myabe it is something particular to your police force.

Same here... no-one countersigned ours either and they were accepted for work visa...

It must be different for different police forces/constabularies.

I had to get mine signed. There was a section on the application form to get it countersigned by someone in a profession.

Lucky for me one of my mates is a policewoman so she countersigned mine.

Yeh Jo

Dave was working in Wigan when he got his from the police station there and I got mine in Warrington. So Dave's was Merseyside police and mine was Cheshire police.

Must be different for different forces.

Sandra,

I think we come under Greater Manchester Police. Merseyside just stops at Haydock.

Ours came back really quick though. I though it was a speeding fine at first because it had crimestoppers on the franked post mark. Near cra**** myself. Then I saw Ian had one and put 2 and 2 together did an impression of sherlock holmes and realised it was the police report.

Sorry - you're right. Dave's was Greater Manchester.

Got mine countersinged by a neighbor that works for Wigan council. So she was cival servant.

I suppose a Post Man is a cival servant. :?

If you've lived there for over a year with the same postie, get him/her to sign it! :P

Off course i'm only joking about that, pay out some dosh for your doctor if you can't find anyone else.

Mine came back within two weeks and I gave it in on Dec 22nd, Crimbo period.

Thanks guys, sorry didn't make myself very clear.... it's the form you fill in to get the police report which needs counter signed.

I can't really see why they need that .....surely they have all the info on you on their computers?? Anyhoo, we don't know anyone important, so ours pals will just have to sign it.

There are clear instructions accompnying the form.
Ask your doctor, and if you have to pay a fee, then pay it.
You can even ask you childs headmaster as long as you've known them for over a year. I think.

To be honest, I don't think it is that clear. OK, so they are saying the person has to be of 'standing' who has known you for at least one year.... Are they saying they would rather have a solicitor sign it who you've seen twice in 5 years than your best friend who knows you better than most people but is 'only' a Senior IT Manager ?????

Sounds like nonsense to me. :no

I once had some papers countersigned by a "friend" who had letters after his name (nothing to do with NZ), and this was great as far as the relevant authority was concerned.
However, said "friend" was in fact one of the biggest crooks I have ever known. On that basis Milliemoo, yes, absolute nonsense.

Nuff said..... me pal's signing it! :yes

I mean, they'll have my passport and council tax bill, what difference will the counter signature make?? Humpf

Strange how different police forces differ, didn't have to get ours countersigned, but that was a year ago, maybe when I ask again things will have changed.

Rimbo

The reason why you can get a solictor to sign it is that he/she is a person of notary public (or summit like that) and their signiture will come with an offical stamp.
I took some bank details to a solicitor last week to be signed so i could open an NZ bank account.
My wife gets her boss to countersign her passport cos he is a qualified accountant, and has letters after his name.

It is stupid i know :?
but if needs must

We had to get our application countersigned for Essex police. Got our neighbour who is the chairman of the Rotary club to do it.

I think the reason they want someone of standing to countersign it is due to fraud. If you were lying about who you were and then got a mate to sign it then there is no come back. But if a a Dr or a Solictor (qualified account etc) signed it knowing it to be frauduelent, they can then get fined by their association or even booted out, which will mean the end of their careers.

It also assumes in a quaint english way that a solictor / Dr wouldn't lie on an official document because they are 'good' proffessional people

Just sent off our police check forms (Strathclyde police) and they did not need any signature but ours. We did have to show our passports at the police station when we handed them in - proff that we are who we say we are - but nothing else

Related: just got our checks back. Did other fourm folks' completed checks look like a one-page letter, signed on behalf of the data Proection chief, with "No record" or something about two-thirds down the page and then a line right at the bottom saying "This is not a cert. of good character"?
Just wondering if we got the right thing back! :nice1

Cheers,
Matt.

Hi Margaret,

That's wierd, I would have thought it would be the same across Scotland ? Hey hum ..... Anyhoo, Lothian & Borders require a counter signature, but I'm definately not going to too much trouble over it, especially if you guys didn't even need one! :?

How long did it take to get the reports to come through? Did you just have to show your passports, not send them with the application?

Thanks

Yep ours was a very simple page signed etc..... would be perhaps different if they had anything to say about you though.

Nicola

We did not have to have ours countersigned but we did have to send our driving licencencs with them to verify who we are. Ours were sent to the Northumbrian Police Force.

Ours was from Dorset police, but they all end up coming from Scotland Yard I think. No counter signature required for Dorset.

And yes, it is just a simple one page letter (blue).
